Lack of affordable housing in the community Situational and generational poverty Health problems including addiction disorders and mental illness Domestic violence Natural and other disasters that lead to uninhabitable conditions Abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction (unaccompanied homeless youth)

3 How many students experience homelessness nationwide and in Iowa?
Public schools identified 1.3 million McKinney-Vento-eligible students in the school year. 100% increase since 2007, relatively steady since Iowa: 6,774 Gazette article, December 2017 NCHE (National Center for Homeless Education) Federal Report

Currently identified: 92 Identified in : 116

Initial enrollment into the district Change in address form Self-referral to staff Partnerships with local MV Liaisons in the area (Linn Mar, Iowa City, Marion, Cedar Rapids) Staff referral to Homeless Liaison Determination of eligibility by Homeless Liaison

7 ESSA revisions in action
Transportation: CR City Bus, Century Cab, CCSD special routes MV: 11 students, 6 daily routes (Century or CCSD), and 6 PHS students w/ city bus passes Foster: 3 students, 3 daily routes (Century or CCSD), and 1 student w/ city bus pass The Way Home, Inn Circle, and Heart of Iowa Foster care: students in foster care are not eligible for MV services, but have similar rights under ESSA.
