1 Fluid Sampling Made Simple OilScan

2 What is Oil Analysis? Oil analysis provides a detailed view of what is happening within machine components during operation Identifies Wear, Contaminant & Additive Elements: Detects 21 elements that can represent wear metals ] wear corrosion, dirt contamination and oil and coolant additives in the lubricant Monitors Lubricant Physical Properties: Viscosity Total Acid Number Water Content Soot Fuel Dilution

3 Step 1: Sample Collection
5 methods, 1 standard. Fill Port Dip Stick Port Sampling Port Return Line Tap Drain Port

4 Step 1: Sample Collection
Fill Cap – Utilizes Vacuum Sample Device (Bellow,® or Sample Pump) Sample drawn through fill cap Vacuum container pulls sample into bottle Tube length should be cut to meet center level of the sump Simple, Clean, Easy, and Reliable

5 Step 1: Sample Collection
Dip-Stick / Drop Tube - Utilizes Vacuum Sample Device (Bellow,® or Sample Pump) Most popular sampling method for static tanks and crankcases Universal lube access through fill-ports and/or dipstick channels No special hardware installation Insert tube to center level of sump Avoid jamming tube against bottom of sump

6 Step 1: Sample Collection
Dip-Stick / Drop Tube - Utilizes Vacuum Sample Device (Bellow,® or Sample Pump) Most popular sampling method for static tanks and crankcases Universal lube access through fill-ports and/or dipstick channels No special hardware installation Insert tube to center level of sump Avoid jamming tube against bottom of sump

7 Step 1: Sample Collection
Drain Port – No special sampling apparatus required Least accurate and reliable method Remove drain plug from bottom of tank and allow sufficient flow to remove any bottom sediment and water Perform visual assessment of sample to ensure no visible debris is present, resample if necessary

8 Step 1: Sample Collection
Sample Port (Sump) - Utilizes fixed sample port such as Mini-mess or Push-Button Permanent sampling fixture or port Collection source provides consistent accuracy Provides exceptional assessment of machine status Applicable on pressurized and unpressurized systems

9 Step 1: Sample Collection
Sample Port (In-Line) - Utilizes fixed sample port such as Mini-mess or Push-Button Sample drawn from common return line Collection point provides superior accuracy Should be located up- stream of the filter Best method for assessment of a machines contamination

10 Step 2: Ensure a Quality Collection
Sample Precautions Draw all lube samples from optimal areas of the tank or return line Collect while lubricant is circulating or collect within 30-minutes of shutdown Consistency is key, take samples the same way each time

11 Step 2: Ensure a Quality Collection
Don’t Wait for the Lab… Perform visual assessment on-site Look for irregularities in your sample: Water Visible Metal or Debris Abnormal Discoloration Cloudiness Take any necessary corrective actions ***Note any abnormal condition(s) on your sample form***

12 Step 3: Provide Detailed Sample Information
Help the Lab Help You Complete all required documentation (Sample Form / Label) Report if sample was drawn cold Describe atypical conditions Include consistent equipment ID numbers Supply test point locations

13 Step 4: Equipment Precautions
Inspect lube levels before sampling Monitor lube levels while sampling Ensure all caps are put back on and sample ports closed after sampling is completed

14 Step 5: Review Results Review sample reports immediately and implement corrections and recommendations without delay Sample reports are available electronically through Analysts’ cloud-based Lube Oil Analysis Management System (LOAMS®) Login at:
