Balalaika Balalaika (Балалайка) is a Russian folk stringed musical instrument. It has a shape of a triangle. Balalaika is a symbol of the Russian people.

Capital City Capital city of Russia is Moscow. Before it was St. Petersburg, but it changed to Moscow because of location.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky Fyodor Dostoevsky (Фёдор Достоевский) is a Russian writer, thinker, philosopher, and publicist. He is one of the famous Russian writers. I started to read his book “The Brothers Karamazov” (Братья Карамазовы).

Food Traditional Russian soups are cabbage soup (Щи), borsch (Борщ), rassolnik (Рассольник), solyanka (Солянка), kalya (Калья), uha (Уха) and okroshka (Окрошка). Meat in Russia was eaten boiled or roasted. For example, Pozharsky cutlets, beef Stroganoff, Veal "Eagles". The most common meat dish is a piece of pork, whole baked. Some popular deserts are: cakes (Калачи), cookies (Пряники), and jams (Варенья) and honey (Мёд). Traditional drinks are sbiten (Сбитень), honey (Медовуха), fruit drink (Морс). My favorite Russian food is borsch, pelmeny, and sour cream (Сметана).

House Izba Izba (Изба) is the ancient Russian house made out of wood and can have 2 floors.

Language Russian came from east Slavic language. It is an official language in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is an unofficial but widely spoken language in Ukraine, Latvia, and Estonia. Russian language is quite difficult to learn.

Matryoshka Matryoshka is a Russian wooden toy in the form of a painted doll which has some little dolls inside. In several cities matryoshka museums work: in Moscow - in Leontief Lane, in Nizhny Novgorod, in Nolinsk, Kalyazin, Ascension and Sergiev Posad.

Opera Russian opera appeared in the XVIII century. Famous Russian theatres are: the Mariinsky (Мариинский), Bolshoi (Большой), Perm (Пермский), and Samara (Самарский).

Plants There are so many forests in Russia. The most popular tree is birch (Берёза). In ancient Russia used birch bark instead of paper. Its name is elm (Береста).

Red Square Red Square is a square in the centre of Moscow. Russians call it Heart of Moscow because of the location and the color of square. There are so many attractions in Red square. There are two big shopping malls Ohotniy Ryad (Охотный ряд) and GUM. GUM (ГУМ) is a really popular shopping mall in Moscow. It has two buildings. First is for adults and teens. Second is for kids. GUM was built in 1893.

School There are really strong schools in Russia. I am in the 7th grade in AIS but I feel that I am in the 4th grade. Some Russian schools have uniform. In school first language is Russian and second is English just for general education. In Russian school there are only 11 grades. In USSR (СССР) students had a different program. They wore another uniform and there were only 10 grades.

Traditional Costume Women wore sundresses with a blouse with embroidery. On their heads are usually worn kokoshniki (Кокошники) or scarves. Previously, the village women and men wore special wood sandals (Лапти). Men wore a red blouse with embroidery, pants and boots. On holidays they wore a cap with a flower.

Vacation On vacation in Moscow you can go to the Red Square. Big Theatre is a theatre where balet (Балет) and opera perform. In Moscow many parks have different activities. Also you can go to the shopping mall.
