Getting the most out of our compost
Confederation College - Children and Family Centre

What is composting? A compost allows things like fruit and vegetable trimmings, coffee grinds and eggshells to decompose and become nutrient-rich soil Composting is a form of recycling and therefore it lessens the amount of garbage collected at landfills The soil created from our compost will be used to grow plants, fruits and vegetables

Composting is an essential component throughout the entire day…

PLANTING At the Children and Family Centre our children are actively participating in the composting cycle! Planting is the first step in composting because it is the cores and peelings from these foods that will go into our compost and be the soil to generate our garden in the following year.

HARVESTING The children are excited about being a part of the composting cycle and they are involved in the process every step of the way! Our compost will create a rich soil that will in turn produce bountiful crops.

EATING The foods grown in our garden will be used to provide children with endless educational and nutritional experiences.

COMPOSTING “Children are excited about being taught environmental stewardship…” Larraine Roulston (2012)

Some other benefits of composting in the daycare:
Immediate reduction in waste removal from site Reduces our carbon footprint Promotes sustainability Saves money by growing our own foods Encourages children to explore the outdoor environment and natural cycles Allows children to be exposed to a variety of safe and healthy foods

Thank you! From the educators, children, and families at the Children and Family Centre for taking the time to understand our values.
