3 How California Got Its Name
In 1535, The Spaniard Hernan de Cortes sailed west from the coast of New Spain (Mexico) in search of a mythical island inhabited by strong, black women, and rich with gold. The island, called "California" in an account by Garcia Ordonez Montalvo in 1510, was ruled by the queen "Califia." 11/9/2018

6 Rita Maria Valdez Maria Rita Valdez, granddaughter of Luis Quintero, a Negro founder of Los Angeles in In the 1820's she acquired the rancho Rio Rodeo de Los Aguas which today is known as Beverly Hills. Their adobe was still standing across the road from the Beverly Hills Hotel as late as 1920. 11/9/2018

7 Francisco & Isidro Reyes
were grandsons of Juan Francisco Reyes, first Los Angeles mayor of African descent , who was also the first grantee of the San Fernando Valley. Isidro Reyes lived in Santa Monica canyon where his father worked a large tract of land extending to what is now Hollywood. He was sent by his father to the Brea pits to sell tar to the Los Angeles people who used it for their roofs. 9 Gov. Pio Pico Pio Pico, shown here with his wife, was the Governor of the Mexican state of California when the United States invaded. Pico organized the defense against the U.S. invaders, and histories of the conflict credit Pio Pico and his brother Andres with great determination in this unsuccessful effort to keep California part of Mexico. The Pico family was among the first settlers of the little town that today is the metropolis of Los Angeles. The those original settlers came from central Mexico and Sonora, and the majority of them had African heritage, according to 1790s census reports. 11/9/2018

10 Biddy Mason Biddy Mason came to California as a slave in 1851 accompanied by her three daughters, Ellen, Harriet and Ann. They were freed by the courts in Biddy Mason purchased two lots between Spring and Broadway, Third and Fourth streets in 1866 for $ Thirty years later her heirs refused $200,000 for only a part of this land. Mrs. Mason helped several churches and many needy settlers during her lifetime thus making a lasting impression on the life of this city. She died in 1891 at the age of seventy-three. 11/9/2018
