1 THE EARTH. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
A Team job for young space explorers. THE EARTH. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE

2 THE EARTH. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
During the next three weeks five Missions are to be accomplished by this Class. Five Teams will take off to the Outer Space and request information so a Final Report should be shown to the Class.

3 THE EARTH. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
THE CONTAINS OF EACH MISSION WILL BE DESCRIBED ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDES. Pay attention before you choose one. FIVE MISSIONS – FIVE TEAMS. EACH TEAM WILL CARRY OUT A DIFFERENT MISSION

4 THE EARTH. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
MISSIONS are: 1: MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE. 2: THE SOLAR SYSTEM: TYPES OF CELESTIAL BODIES. 3: THE PLANETS: DWARF, INNER AND OUTER 4: THE EARTH-MOON-SUN SYSTEM: ECLIPSES AND MOON PHASES 5: THE EARTH-MOON-SUN SYSTEM: THE SEASONS, THE DURATION OF DAYLIGHT AND THE HEIGHT OF THE SUN OVER THE HORIZON ( x 1,25)

5 MISSION #1: MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE
Different ideas mankind has developed to explain the Universe. How did it appear according to the Ancient Egyptians, Greek, Chinese and Present Day scientific knowledge. Geocentrism and Heliocentrism. Explain. Is Heliocentrism our present day explanation to the Universe? Modern explanation to the origin of the Universe. Age of the Universe. When did Time begin?

6 MISSION #2: THE SOLAR SYSTEM, TYPES OF CELESTIAL BODIES.
What is the SOLAR SYSTEM? Where is the SOLAR SYSTEM? Name and describe the different types of bodies that can be found in the Solar System. Find about the origin of these bodies. When did it all started? Age of the Solar System How the Solar System was formed

7 MISSION #3: THE PLANETS; DWARF, INNER AND OUTER
What is a PLANET. What the word “PLANET” meant to the Ancient Greek? Why did they use this word? Three categories of Planets: Why? Name the INNER and OUTER Planets. Place them. Main characteristics of Inner and Outer planets. What are the DWARF Planets? Name some of them. Place them within the Solar System. What is a year? Have all the planets the same duration of their year? What about their Day and Night?

8 MISSION #4: THE EARTH-MOON-SUN SYSTEM: ECLIPSES AND MOON PHASES
Place the EARTH within THE SOLAR SYSTEM Place the SUN and the MOON within the SOLAR SYSTEM and each other and the EARTH. HOW does the MOON work? HOW was the MOON formed: Three theories about its origin: Find out and explain MOON PHASES: Name them. What are they and how they occur. ECLIPSES: MOON and SUN. What are they and how they occur. Recent ECLIPSES: Did you see one? When? How?

9 MISSION #5: THE EARTH-MOON-SUN SYSTEM: THE SEASONS, THE DURATION OF DAYLIGHT AND THE HEIGHT OF THE SUN OVER THE HORIZON The movement of the Earth around the Sun and Itself. The Ecliptic plane. Aphelion, Perihelion. Find out about the Seasons of the Year: What is the cause? Is there any relation with the distance EARTH-SUN. How far are they? Find out about the tilting of the Earth Axis Sunrise and Sunset are always the same?. Does the Sun follow the same path every day all the year round? Explain Are Daylight and Night the same throughout the year ? And are the same everywhere on Earth ? Explain.

10 THE MISSION TEAMS CHOOSE YOUR TEAM or CREW. FIVE TEAMS PER CLASS.
5 or 6 MEMBERS PER TEAM. EACH MEMBER WILL HAVE A CREW-JOB WITHIN THE TEAM. ASSIGN JOBS AND GIVE THE LIST TO TEACHER.

11 HOW TO DO BEFORE TEACHER TRAVELS:
ALL THE CREW TEAMS MUST BE FORMED. GIVE A LIST TO THE TEACHER. GIVE A COOL NAME TO YOUR TEAM. EACH TEAM WILL HAVE TO CHOSE A MISSION. MISSIONS CAN NOT BE REPEATED. ONCE A MISSION HAS BEEN CHOSEN BY A TEAM IT WILL BE DELETED FROM THE LIST. ASSIGN YOUR JOBS AND TELL THE TEACHER WHO IS WHO WITHIN YOUR TEAM.

12 What to do SEARCH (BOOKS, INTERNET, DOCUMENTARY FILMS,…)
WRITE A SHORT REPORT MAKE AND SHOW A PRESENTATION But don’t forget to keep the Teacher daily informed of your advances.

13 THE CREW-JOBS To carry out the Mission you need to be WELL ORGANIZED.
It means that every MEMBER of the TEAM will have a particular RESPONSIBILITY on board as a crew member.

14 -Is not a BOSS but a COORDINATOR-.
THE CREW JOBS CAPTAIN: Needs to be a Natural LEADER. Coordinates all the jobs on board. Makes sure every one does his duty. Maintains order and peace within team. Encourages everyone on team work. Will have to explain to teacher if report is not presented in time. -Is not a BOSS but a COORDINATOR-. Must be fair and equal, will distribute every day work to be done by each member of the team, including him or herself. Of course will have to work as the others, even at the indications of navigators or map-makers

15 THE CREW JOBS SPEAKER: His/her duty is to communicate with the teacher. Every day will the teacher or through Will explain what the Team has done that day, anything that might go wrong should communicate. His/her daily report will be written with the agreement of the rest of the team, and approved by Captain. Any thing the team should need, any question or doubt, will be asked by Speaker to Teacher. Needs to be a responsible person and not forget to report every day to teacher.

16 THE CREW JOBS NAVIGATOR: Does the first Internet scan. Will set the main topics to be found and distribute them to the Crew members. -That does not mean he or she is the only one to use Internet- i.e.: When several concepts have to be found, he or she will distribute who does a search for details at AND WRITES DOWN this assignments so the SPEAKER can tell the teacher on his daily report. We need two organized persons, able to fairly distribute work and keep record of it.

17 THE CREW JOBS MAPMAKER:
For this position we need two students with an artistic touch and able to use Power Point (or any other presentation software) They will make designs, schemes, maps or plans needed to show to the class the job done by the team. Will make a DESIGN of a Power Point presentation. This presentation is done only by the Mapmakers, but they will have to use the information obtained by the team members and their ideas or suggestions. They will show now and then the presentation so the team members will be able to say whether they like it or not and communicate their ideas.

18 NOW YOU KNOW EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START YOUR MISSION.
DON’T FORGET TO REPORT EVERYDAY TO TEACHER. BY OCTOBER 16th YOU WILL HAVE TO SHOW YOUR PRESENTATION TO THE CLASS. WE WILL SPEND THREE SESSIONS ON THE SHOW, SO BE PREPARED AND KEEP BRIEF.

19 GOOD LUCK IN YOUR MISSION
