Preliminary Graphics are sketches, illustrations and thumbnail layouts used at the design stages of new products, new buildings and new publications. Skills in sketching, drawing and rendering are important.

Quick to produce Good way of recording ideas/designs Produced using cheap equipment Quickly annotated to add information Quality of graphic is not as important as the clarity of the information Not normally drawn to scale Not normally dimensionally accurate

4 Production Graphic Communication National
Production Drawings are drawings that include dimensions and technical detail so that products can be made and buildings constructed. Types of production drawings include; dimensioned orthographic views, exploded drawings and sectional views. They are normally always drawn to scale and to drawing standards

5 Production Graphic Communication National Advantages Disadvantages
Important when component parts are to be manufactured Can show how components are assembled Easily dimensioned Understood by all users regardless of language/nationality Accurate and to scale Training or knowledge is required to produce them Drawing standards must be learned Time-consuming to produce Costly specialist equipment is required (computers, software, drawing boards, etc)

6 Promotional Graphic Communication National
Promotional Graphics are documents that are used in advertising to promote a product. Promotional documents often include an illustration with text or a background. The layout is carefully planned to create visual impact and is designed to appeal to a specific target market. Examples include; posters, brochures, graphs and charts and webpages.

Easier to understand than production drawings Can be made to look realistic Can be used in promotional documents or videos Show the consumer what the product/building will look like Can be animated to create visual appeal Can make product look attractive in order to help sell Require skill and knowledge to produce Can give a false impression of the product Can’t physically handle a rendered product
