4 CS Caritas Socialis home care day care centres
3 nursing homes (specialising in dementia, multiple sclerosis and palliative care) shared apartments for people with dementia palliative care unit and mobile palliative teams consulting services nursery schools and a residential home for mother and child CARITAS SOCIALIS was established in 1919 by Hildegard Burjan as clerical sisterhood with the assignment to alleviate social misery. To get down to the root of the social misery combined with “the courage for new things” – this was the goal of Hildegard Burjan, and it remained the goal of Caritas Socialis up to today. 5 How it all began journey to Berlin
visit of the dementia-friendly network in Charlottenburg- Wilmersdorf small project team at CS Caritas Socialis dream of „dementia-friendly“ decision in which district to begin 3rd district talk to the district chairperson and agreement 3rd district: situated in the centre of Vienna, inhabitants, average population in the aspects of age, percentage of migration … One of our Care and social centers is there and I am a citizen in the 3rd district

Participants are handicapped in managing every day life by cognitive deficits. They are either living With dementia or worried about their memory. 21 What we did first networking and learning from each other
practical knowledge transfer for example in adult education centres, the library, a nursery school, a school Small groups in adult education centers allow information and councelling, sometimes next of kin are interested but also other visitors who are old themselves or are afraid of becoming demented. It‘s much about removing anxiety.

22 Activity day in a shopping centre
15 partner standing in the midst of the entrance hall of a shopping centre for a whole day: Many people pass by, ask questions, want to speak of their experiences or troubles, some of them need counselling or help. It was amazing that even young people stopped and wanted to deal with our topic. There were many stalls with information, leaflets but also stalls offering to try memory trainings. Our artist made a big helmet someone could try on to test how it may feel when you suffer from dementia

23 Dementia-friendly services
Sensitization of a parish, dementia-friendly means that there is much tolerance for walking around, singing or talking in between, that the priest tries to speak using simple and less words, there is much singing and experiential sensations for example smelling, touching with essential oil And afterwards everybody is drinking coffee and the partners give information

24 Visiting a museum is participating in cultural life

25 Art History Museum Vienna
Belvedere, Dom Museum (Cathedral Treasury) + Atelier Museum staff and assistants of people with dementia are trained, museum staff present a small number of objects about a certain topic for example love, a group of about 10 people with dementia and their assistants look at the pictures/paintings/objects and discuss them not only in the aspect of art history but also in terms of memory (first love, falling in love in the forties, my first kiss). Art activates feelings and memory and brings a cheerful atmosphere. After the presentation the group comes together in the atelier and is instructed to do their own work of art.

People affected by dementia/forgetfulness meet to share their memories: wine tavern dementia-friendly coffee guided walk in the neighbourhood

27 Next steps meetings of district coordinators an umbrella organisation
discussing how to raise funds enlargen the offers networking with other Austrian communities Two meetings of the coordinators to get to know each other, to exchange experiences, to learn from one another Preparing talks for an umbrella organisation to assist the coordinators with for example creating a website or building a platform, organizing the meetings… Sponsorship Offers: People affected by dementia/forgetfulness should have the possibility to remain in their communities- sports, dancing, choir…, open minded groups where they are welcomed

43 trained volunteers Dementia-friendly companions accompany affected families at home but also in nursing homes, day care centres and living communities.

29 Training for dementia-friendly companions
The training wants to enable participants to assist families affected by dementia so that they can participate in daily live. 80 hours in half a year Educational Centre of the Jesuits Participants: volunteers, next of kin, people interested Companions should: be able to cope with their own age be provided with information about dementia look into the topic of dying and grief learn to communicate with persons affected by forgetfulness discuss ethical and legal aspects Disease, types of dementia, symptoms, challenges in contact validation

30 Dementia-friendly Companions
once a week for 2 – 3 hours being there for talking accompany walks or outdoor activities unburdening carers They are involved in a multiprofessional team and don‘t replace skilled employees. They take part in further training and are supervised. Little activities like reading the newspaper together, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles

…I can take time for my own regeneration …I know my mother is safe …I am free for shopping and doing my chores Feedback for the companions „My mother is really challenging but my companion is very positive and manages well to be balanced and to lead my mother!
