2 Does the Moon Rotate? Rotate the Moon (the penny) by itself. Pay attention to the direction of Abe’s face. What do you notice? Use the Quarter and the Penny to create a model for what it would look like for the moon to: Revolve around the Earth while it rotates Revolve around the Earth without rotating. Penny = Moon Quarter = Earth 3. In your spiral draw a diagram for each model. Show the position of the penny at each cross position. Earth

8 Key Question If we know that when we stand anywhere on Earth we only see one side of the moon, does the moon rotate on its axis?

11 What kind of motion does the moon have in space?
Rotates on its axis once in 27.3 Earth days Revolves around the Earth once in 27.3 Earth days Synchronized Rotation = length of time for 1 rotation is equal to length of time for 1 revolution. Must be synchronized for us to only see one side of the Moon from Earth.
