2 Act 3, Scene 1 Macbeth Banquo Lady Macbeth Servant First Murderer
Second Murderer The theme of deception is key throughout the play and linked to the theme of appearance vs reality. In Act 3, Scene 1, Macbeth appears to be kind to Banquo and invite him to dinner, whilst Banquo suspects Macbeth has been dishonest. Behind Banquo’s back, Macbeth’s true thoughts are revealed in a soliloquy as he waits for the murderers he has summoned to kill Banquo.

3 WHAT BANQUO SAYS ABOUT MACBETH WHAT MACBETH SAYS ABOUT BANQUO
Act 3, Scene 1 WHAT BANQUO SAYS ABOUT MACBETH WHAT MACBETH SAYS ABOUT BANQUO “Thou hast it now, King, Cawdor, Glamis, all as the weird women promised, and I fear thou played most foully for’t” What is Banquo saying here? What does he suspect Macbeth of? “Here’s our chief guest…tonight we hold a solemn supper, sir, and I’ll request your presence” What is the “solemn supper” for? Why is Macbeth being kind to Banquo?

4 MACBETH Vs. Banquo To be thus is nothing, But to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature Reigns that which would be feared. 'Tis much he dares, And to that dauntless temper of his mind He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valor To act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear, and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is said Mark Antony’s was by Caesar. He chid the sisters When first they put the name of king upon me And bade them speak to him. Then, prophet like, Dauntless = confident Valor = bravery Rebuked = criticised Chid = told off

5 Murder & Deception They hailed him father to a line of kings. Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown And put a barren scepter in my grip, Thence to be wrenched with an unlineal hand, No son of mine succeeding. If ’t be so, For Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind; For them the gracious Duncan have I murdered; Put rancors in the vessel of my peace Only for them; and mine eternal jewel Given to the common enemy of man, To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings! Rather than so, come fate into the list, And champion me to th' utterance. Wrenched = twisted Unlineal = no lineage Rancors = bitterness, resentment Vessel = container Utterance = statement

6 Act 3, Scene 2 Servant Macbeth Lady Macbeth

7 Choose three quotations and analyse them in detail focusing on:
Act 3, Scene 2 We have scorched the snake, not killed it. She’ll close and be herself whilst our poor malice Remains in danger of her former tooth. But let the frame of things disjoint, both the worlds suffer, Ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep In the affliction of these terrible dreams That shake us nightly. Better be with the dead, Whom we, to gain our peace, have sent to peace, Than on the torture of the mind to lie In restless ecstasy. Duncan is in his grave. After life’s fitful fever he sleeps well. Treason has done his worst; nor steel nor poison, Malice domestic, foreign levy, nothing Can touch him further. List the words that suggest fear, evil and darkness. What imagery is used? How would it impact religious Jacobean audiences? Choose three quotations and analyse them in detail focusing on: Literal meaning Connotations Technique used

8 Atmosphere 2 PEELAC Paragraphs
What language techniques are used? What contextual information could we include? How does Shakespeare create an atmosphere of fear and evil in Act 3, Scene 2? How would you describe this scene? 2 PEELAC Paragraphs

9 Act 3, Scene 3 It is dusk, and the two murderers, now joined by a third, linger in a wooded park outside the palace. Banquo and Fleance approach on their horses and dismount. They light a torch, and the murderers set upon them. The murderers kill Banquo, who dies urging his son to flee and to avenge his death. One of the murderers extinguishes the torch, and in the darkness Fleance escapes. The murderers leave with Banquo’s body to find Macbeth and tell him what has happened.

10 [Enter BANQUO, and FLEANCE with a torch]
Act 3, Scene 3 A PARK NEAR THE PALACE. [Enter Three Murderers] First Murderer But who did bid thee join with us? Third Murderer Macbeth. Second Murderer He needs not our mistrust, since he delivers Our offices and what we have to do To the direction just. First Murderer Then stand with us. The west yet glimmers with some streaks of day: Now spurs the lated traveller apace To gain the timely inn; and near approaches The subject of our watch. Third Murderer Hark! I hear horses. BANQUO [Within] Give us a light there, ho! Second Murderer Then 'tis he: the rest That are within the note of expectation Already are i' the court. First Murderer His horses go about. Third Murderer Almost a mile: but he does usually, So all men do, from hence to the palace gate Make it their walk. Second Murderer A light, a light!
