2 Tragedy Vocab Tragedy: Sober, thoughtful plays that are based on profound human emotions and conflicts that do not change with time or place. Protagonist: The focus of every tragedy, the main character. They are going to fail. Inevitability: What will happen will happen no matter what.

Pathos: The quality of drama that arouses feelings of pity and compassion. Catharsis: An emotional release that is a result of the pity we feel when the protagonist falls. Hamartia: A character weakness or error in judgment. Hubris: The most common form of hamartia meaning excessive pride.

4 Characteristics found in Tragedy Characters
They have a flaw that has serious consequences They make no apology for their actions They set goals based on unyielding beliefs They know that almost everything worth having demands some sacrifice They are willing to make the sacrifice themselves, never asking another to make sacrifices for them

5 Comedy Comedy means “revel song”
All characters come together at the end of the play Even the villain usually rejoins the group The protagonist overcomes opposing forces or achieves desired goal It is built around character situation and dialogue

6 Types of Laughter Exaggeration: An overstatement or understatement
Physical: large nose, big teethe, funny walk Mental: Prodigy child, extremely dumb person h?v=q--6wtCPHg8

7 Laughter Cont. Incongruity: Anything that seems out of place, out of time, or out of character A modern reference in a play that is set in the past Anticipation: Looking forward to a potential laugh Banana peel on the sidewalk (plant) h?v=rOLCwaHVtWs

Recognition: Discovering hidden or obscure meanings Protection: Cruel, violent, grotesque, and abusive actions and events h?v=z- YboYXqfsg&feature=related

Inevitable—there is no way to change or stop the outcome Universal theme and appeal Emotional Protagonist fails to achieve goals Protagonist alienated from society Protagonist is average or better Falls from leadership, losing respect Predictably unpredictable— you can expect the unlikely Often time and place oriented Protagonist achieves goals Often becomes leader of new society Less than average Achieves success, often as a result of own mistakes
