3. Sentence Builder Graphic Organizer
On a blank sentence builder graphic organizer, students in pairs create academic sentences that extend the sentence by adding detail, elaboration, and explanation.
Fill out the Basic row first (Who/What and Does/Is = subject and action/predicate).
Upgrade vocabulary by discussing with partner the How, Where, and Why possibilities in the Notes for Elaboration row.
Finally, build an elaborated sentence based on the graphic organizer.

8. Sinking of the Lusitania, May 1915
On May 7, 1915, a German submarine shot a single torpedo at close range at the Lusitania, a British passenger ship that had sailed from New York and was just off the Irish coast. The ship sank in just 18 minutes, far faster than the Titanic had three years earlier. Although there were sufficient lifeboats, people simply did not have time to get in them. More than a thousand passengers were killed, including 128 Americans and 94 children. American newspapers widely reported this disaster. The sinking of the Lusitania had a powerful impact on the American public, stirring up anti-German feelings and creating a desire for revenge. Germans claimed the Lusitania had secretly concealed armaments. President Wilson sent a strong protest to Germany, but he refused to declare war.
