Write, read and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers. Identify parts of an expression using terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient). Evaluate expressions.

2. Vocabulary
Numerical Expression: a mathematical phrase that uses only numbers and operation symbols.
Example: – 2, (2),
Algebraic Expression: a mathematical phrase
that contains numbers, variables, and
operation symbols.
Example: 6y – 3n, ,
Variable: place holder for a number (i.e. symbols or letters that represent a number like x or y)

3. Terms: Parts of the expression separated by + or - signs
COEFFICIENT: the number in front of a variable.
Example: 6x coefficient
CONSTANT TERM: A number standing on its own or without a variable.
Example: 5x constant term

4. Identify Terms, Coefficients and Constants
Identify the terms, coefficients and constants in each expression.
