WHAT IS IT? HOW TO CALCULATE IT? The journal Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year. The Impact Factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the JCR year by the total number of articles published in the two previous years. CiteScore metric CiteScore is a metric for measuring journal impact in Scopus. The calculation of CiteScore for the current year is based on the number of citations received by a journal in that year for the documents published in the journal in the past three years, divided by the documents indexed in Scopus published in those three years. This comprehensive, current and open metric for journal citation impact (introduced in December 2016) is available in a fee layer of Scopus.com. It includes a yearly release and monthly CiteScore tracker updates. November 8, 2018 CiteScore vs Impact Factor by Asst. Prof. Dr. Emad Kamil Hussein

CiteScore Tracker CiteScore Tracker CiteScore Tracker shows how the current year’s CiteScore builds up each month. New serial titles can receive CiteScore metrics the year after they are first indexed by Scopus. There is no charge to use CiteScore metrics. Anyone can access serial- level metrics functionality on Scopus, as well as all CiteScore metrics, without cost. 17 The CiteScore metrics Advantage
Researchers, publishers, information professionals, institutional leaders, funders and others in academia can use CiteScore metrics to gain greater insight into journal citation impact. As parts of a multi- dimensional basket of metrics, CiteScore metrics help boost confidence in decision making. CiteScore metrics can help to: Reveal titles to create reading lists, as well as acquire evidence about title relevance and performance in a field Analyze the citation impact of a library’s collection, where an output is published, and publication/portfolio strategies Validate tenure, promotion and publishing decisions November 8, 2018 CiteScore vs Impact Factor by Asst. 18 The CiteScore metrics Advantages
Advantages of CiteScore Metrics Comprehensive Transparent Current Based on Scopus, the world's broadest abstract and database. CiteScore metrics will be available for all serial titles not just journals. CiteScore metrics could be calculated for portfolios. CiteScore metrics will be available for free. CiteScore metrics are easy to calculate for yourself. The underlying database is available for you to interrogate. CiteScore Tracker is updated monthly. New titles will have CiteScore metrics the year after they are indexed in Scopus. November 8, 2018 CiteScore vs Impact Factor by Asst. Prof. Dr. Emad Kamil Hussein

19 Comparison of CiteScore, CiteScore Tracker and Impact Factor
Item Desirable Characteristic CiteScore Tracker Impact Factor Notes 1 Metric measures citation per document Yes Replicate strong characteristics 2 Simple method 3 Annual snapshot for reporting purposes No 4 Document type consistency (num. and denom.) Improved methodology 5 Fair compromise for all fields (3 years citation window) 6 Derivative metric addresses disciplinary differences 7 Ongoing inclusion of error correction Comprehensive 8 Available for all serial indexed (not only journals) Current 9 New titles have the metric next calendar year 10 Tracking view for verification and decision making 11 Metric is current (updated monthly) Transparent 12 It is calculated from the same database I use 13 Metric and derivative metrics are free 14 I can use a free widget on my webpage 15 Journal level evaluation functionality is free 16 Underlying database available to verify calculation November 8, 2018 CiteScore vs Impact Factor by Asst. 21 Predatory Open Access Journals & Publishing
In academic publishing, predatory open access publishing is an exploitative open-access publishing business model that involves charging publication fees to authors without providing the editorial and publishing services associated with genuine journals (open access or not). "Beall's List", a regularly updated report by Jeffrey Beall, sets forth criteria for categorizing predatory publications and lists publishers and independent journals that meet those criteria. Newer scholars from developing countries are said to be especially at risk of becoming the victim of these practices. Jeffery Beall Who coined the term "predatory publishing first time in 2010. He is a Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of Colorado Denver, USA. He is studying scholarly open-access publishing.
