First aid is the initial emergency care provided to a person suffering from trauma or sudden illness until professional medical assistance is available to take over the care of the injured person First aid is the first link in the EMS system Emphasize that we are “first in” and will have information about the accident not available to anyone else. Resort and next EMS level may need this info The CSP Patroller’s Manual demonstrates one method of practice that is effective in the majority of situations encountered by patrollers. It does not purport to be the sole method. Patient safety is paramount at all times and in all practices.

3 What Makes a Good First Aider?
Technical knowledge by virtue of training and learning Holds a current first aid certificate Ability to use this knowledge, assess the situation and administer their first aid as needed Ability to react confidently under pressure Professional appearance

Gather information Be professional Prompt and effective care Communicate with appropriate personnel Transport to next level of EMS Communicate and report the details of the incident First aid provider’s responsibility is to take charge of an emergency situation through definitive command and confident action. First aid provides immediate and temporary care. It is the first link in the EMS system. It is FA responsibility to be that first link and to pass your patient on to professional medical services.

5 The success of the first aider's efforts to assist the patient depends largely upon an organized application of learned skills.

6 Legal Aspects Your best protection is to be properly trained and qualified to a recognized set of standards and adhere to those standards Receive Consent Actual Consent Implied Consent Legal Protection: Your best protection is to be properly trained and certified to a recognized set of standards and adhere to those standards when performing First Aid. Instructor may choose to provide additional information about legal aspects for their specific province. You must receive consent from every conscious, mentally competent adult before you provide care. It is essential that every patient gives you permission to be treated. Types of Consent: There are two types of consent: a. Actual Consent, and b. Implied Consent.
