1 Poetry Can Be Classified As..
TRADITIONAL FREE-VERSE Has rules/expectations that you must follow Has rhyme Has rhythm Has a meter Has a pattern of some sort Does not require you to follow a pattern Does not require rhyme or rhythm You can write this type of poem in any way that you see fit without having to follow someone else’s rules/expectations

2 Poetry… All types of poetry contain the following:
Lines The equivalent of a sentence in a poem Stanza The equivalent of a paragraph in a poem Some poems contain the following: Couplet: a two-line stanza Quatrain: a four-line stanza Octave: an eight-line stanza

3 Alphabet Poem This poem requires 26 lines
Each line must begin with the next letter of the English alphabet, starting with the letter A and ending with the letter Z Does not have to rhyme, but it can Challenge yourself and make each line a complete thought Suggested themes: Countries of the World, Animals, Colors, Food

4 Haikus and Tankas A Japanese form of poetry that traditionally is about nature They each have a different number of lines Haiku = 3 Tanka = 5 Because they have a different number of lines they also have a different meter Haiku = 5-7-5 Tanka = There are no requirements for rhyme scheme for either poem

5 Limericks Must be constructed of 5 lines
Must follow this rhyme scheme: AABBA Must possess a specific rhythm Typically starts with ‘There once a …” Topic: something funny, but it does need to be school- appropriate

6 Rhyme Scheme A rhyme scheme is a pattern of similar sounds, typically found at the end of the line Rhyme is usually created with similar vowel sounds: AEIOU Some poems require a specific rhyme scheme, others allow you to make your own pattern You label a rhyme scheme with the letters of the English alphabet, every line that rhymes with each other must be labeled with the same letter

7 There once was a boy named Joe Who went sledding in the snow He fell off his sled And bumped his head And left him full of woe.

8 Poem #4 Isolation quickly overwhelms me Begging for forgiveness, a fallen hand Desolation I now begin to see Hanging by a thin thread, a single strand I watch them… Their fears, their misbehaviour Mistreat, abuse…. Completely unaware I am the land, their glorious saviour Someday they will learn to treat me with care I wish they would learn to trust each other To join as one, to stand strong together A bond, a band and a mighty brother Forever as one, a powerful tether You may not know, that fear is their captor So you may not see each special factor

9 English Sonnets Must contain 16 lines total
Must follow this rhyme scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGG Must end with a couplet Does not need to have rhythm Suggested topics: since this was a poem made popular during the Renaissance, write it about your experience at the Renaissance Festival
