1 Molecules and Motion The motion of molecules produces heat The more motion, the more heat is generated

2 Heat Transfer Heat always moves from a warmer place to a cooler place.
Hot objects in a cooler room will cool to room temperature. Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.

3 Forms of heat transfer Three forms of heat transfer: Conduction Convection Radiation

4 Conduction Conduction involves the transfer of heat through direct contact Heat conductors conduct heat well, insulators do not

5 Conduction When you heat a metal strip at one end, the heat travels to the other end. As you heat the metal, the particles vibrate, these vibrations make the adjacent particles vibrate, and so on and so on, the vibrations are passed along the metal and so is the heat. We call this? Conduction

6 Metals are different When the metal is heated, this ‘sea of electrons’ gain kinetic energy and transfer it throughout the metal. The outer e______ of metal atoms drift, and are free to move. lectrons Insulators, such as wood and paper, do not have this ‘sea of electrons’ which is why they do not conduct heat as well as metals.

7 Why does metal feel colder than wood, if they are both at the same temperature?
Metal is a conductor, wood is an insulator. Metal conducts the heat away from your hands. Wood does not conduct the heat away from your hands as well as the metal, so the wood feels warmer than the metal.

8 Convection Takes place in liquids and gases as molecules move in currents Heat rises and cold settles to the bottom

9 The particles spread out and become less dense.
Convection What happens to the particles in a liquid or a gas when you heat them? The particles spread out and become less dense. This effects fluid movement. What is a fluid? A liquid or gas.

10 warmer liquids and gases r___ up. Cooler
Fluid movement Cooler, more d____, fluids sink through w_____, less dense fluids. ense armer In effect, liquids and gases s___, warmer liquids and gases r___ up. Cooler ink ise

11 Cools at the surface Water movement Convection current Hot water rises
Cooler water sinks

12 Why is it windy at the seaside?

13 Radiation Heat is transferred through space
Energy from the sun being transferred to the Earth

14 The third method of heat transfer
There are no particles between the Sun and the Earth so it CANNOT travel by conduction or by convection. How does heat energy get from the Sun to the Earth? RADIATION ?

15 Radiation Radiation travels in straight lines True/False
Radiation can travel through a vacuum Radiation requires particles to travel Radiation travels at the speed of light

16 Emission experiment Four containers were filled with warm water. Which container would have the warmest water after ten minutes? Shiny metal Dull metal Dull black Shiny black shiny metal The __________ container would be the warmest after ten minutes because its shiny surface reflects heat _______ back into the container so less is lost. The ________ container would be the coolest because it is the best at _______ heat radiation. radiation dull black emitting

17 Absorption experiment
Four containers were placed equidistant from a heater. Which container would have the warmest water after ten minutes? Shiny metal Dull metal Dull black Shiny black The __________ container would be the warmest after ten minutes because its surface absorbs heat _______ the best. The _________ container would be the coolest because it is the poorest at __________ heat radiation. dull black radiation shiny metal absorbing

18 Why does hot air rise and cold air sink?
Convection questions Why does hot air rise and cold air sink? Cool air is more dense than warm air, so the cool air ‘falls through’ the warm air. Why are boilers placed beneath hot water tanks in people’s homes? Hot water rises. So when the boiler heats the water, and the hot water rises, the water tank is filled with hot water.

19 Radiation questions Why are houses painted white in hot countries? White reflects heat radiation and keeps the house cooler. Why are shiny foil blankets wrapped around marathon runners at the end of a race? The shiny metal reflects the heat radiation from the runner back in, this stops the runner getting cold.

20 What type of heat transfer is involved?
Heating a room with a fireplace Egg cooking in a frying pan Roof of a house becoming hot

21 What type of heat transfer?
Warm air mass bringing a change in the weather Wire getting hot from an electric appliance

22 Temperature and Heat Kinetic energy is the energy of motion Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of an object

23 Question How is kinetic energy related to heat production?

24 Thermometer A instrument used to measure temperature
Thermometers commonly have alcohol (with dye) or mercury Digital thermometers have replaced older ones

25 Celsius Scale Celsius is the metric scale for measuring temperature Water freezes at 0ºC and boils at 100ºC

26 Kelvin scale The Kelvin scale is a metric temperature scale measured in Kelvin units (K) Formula (273+ºC)= Kelvin

27 Absolute zero The temperature in which all molecular motion stops (0 K)

28 Questions Describe absolute zero. What is absolute zero on the Celsius scale?

29 Measuring Heat Increase in temperature Addition of heat
A decrease in temperature Removal of heat

30 Calories Unit for measuring heat The amount of heat needed to raise 1 gram of water one degree Celsius

31 Temperature Joule is another unit for measuring heat
Mass and type of substance determine the amount of temperature change

32 Specific Heat The ability of a substance to absorb heat energy (specific heat) Different substances absorb heat at different rates The greater the mass of the object the more heat is absorbed

33 What is a calorimeter? Device used to measure the heat given off during chemical reactions

34 Heat and Phase Changes A phase change is a physical change that requires a change in heat energy Addition or removal of HEAT

35 Heat expansion The expansion of a substance due to heat Most solids, liquids, and gases expand as they are heated

36 Expansion of water Between 4ºC and 0ºC, water EXPANDS as it cools and turns into a solid

37 Thermostat A thermostat is a device that controls the temperature The switch of a thermostat is a bimetallic strip

38 Bimetallic Strip Two different metals that are bound together They expand at different rates when heated Used as a switch in a thermostat

39 Internal energy The energy within a substance
