6. The required summer reading assignment for incoming 7 th grade Pre-AP is The Giver by Lois Lowry. Students should read closely and critically. They will want to utilize some of the reading strategies learned in 6 th grade such as annotating and/or reader response journals. Students will begin the first nine weeks working with this text. There will be a summative writing assessment associated with the novel. Students may use an electronic reader, hard copy of the book, or library book. For most, a personal copy of the novel is the best choice. However, students proficient with the highlighting and note taking functions of their e-reader are welcome to use that format.
