9 The Presidents Educate to Innovate Campaign will mobilize its efforts to support military childrens math and science achievement. As a key step, the National Math and Science Initiative, in partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology, Department of Defense Education Activity, and leading nonprofits and companies, will lead efforts to expand access for military-connected children to attend advanced placement classes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to public high schools that serve a large number of military families. Why Houston County? NMSIs Initiative for Military Families

10 Why Focus on Military Families? "If you look at what's happened in the last 10 years compared to what's happened in the last 100 years in terms of the technological revolution, our kids have to be able to compete in that kind of an environment. Not everyone has to be an engineer or scientist, but we sure have to understand the fundamentals to prosper. If you look at our communities, we're going to have to raise kids who can compete at the college-level that we can hire on as engineers - electrical, mechanical or aerospace. And, not everyone will be an engineer or go on to college, but we need to have a pool of folks who can support the base and work on the aircraft or systems. We need folks who are grounded with character, fundamentals and principles that come with a solid-base education." General Bruce Litchfield- US Air Force

14 What is STEM? An acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Used in addressing education policy and curriculum choices in K-12 schools through college to improve economic global competitiveness. It has implications for workforce development, national security concerns and immigration policy.

15 87 Million Baby Boomers Will Exit the Workforce by 2020 Some companies will be retraining 100% of their workforce! STEM Increased Participation and Achievement is an Education, Economic Workforce, and National Security Issue

16 Sustained economic development = investment in people (knowledge and skills). No economy can succeed without a high-quality workforce, particularly in an age of globalization and technical change. 8 out of 10 jobs created in the next 5 to 15 years will require high levels of math and science! STEM Increased Participation and Achievement is a National Security Issue According to the Commerce Department, people in STEM fields can expect to earn 26 percent more money on average and be less likely to experience job loss. STEM degree holders also tend to enjoy higher earnings overall, regardless of whether they work in STEM or non-STEM occupations.

17 STEM Increased Participation and Achievement is a National Security Issue STEM Education = Job Creation + Dollars
