1 Learning: Classical Conditioning
Part II

2 Review Research by Ivan Pavlov on digestion in dogs led to the theory of associative learning we know as classical conditioning: Stimulus-response chain UCS –UCR UCS-NS-UCR CS-CR

3 The response to a natural stimulus is transferred through association to a neutral stimulus
The formerly neutral stimulus now becomes a conditioned stimulus

4 Let’s practice When Miah gets back to the dormitory after jogging around the campus, he likes to take a quick shower before going to class. One morning while taking a shower he hears someone flushing a nearby toilet. Suddenly, extremely hot water comes rushing out of the showerhead and Miah experiences excruciating pain. After muttering a few obscenities, he continues showering. A few minutes later, Miah hears another toilet flush and he leaps out of the shower.

5 Molly was ecstatic when she learned her family was going to the state fair next weekend. When her family arrived at the state fair the temperature was in excess of 100F, but Molly didn't care because she was finally there. Molly stopped and watched some clowns performing next to the carousel. As she watched the silly antics of the clowns with the carousel music playing in the background, Molly got more and more sweaty and uncomfortable. Eventually, she fainted from the heat. After that trip to the state fair, every time Molly hears carousel musical she feels a little dizzy.

7 But does the conditioned response last forever?
Extinction: after a period of presenting the CS (bell) without UCS (food), Pavlov’s dogs stopped salivating (CR). This is extinction. However, after some time the CS (bell) was presented and the dogs produced the CR (salivating). This is spontaneous recovery.

8 Pavlov also found that the dogs would respond to differ types of geometric shapes (generalization).
Discrimination: the ability to tell the difference between stimului
