25 QUESTIONS?

26

27 Student Awards & Financial Aid

28 What is OSAP The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides financial assistance to full-time and part-time students to help them attend college or university. OSAP is based on financial need Canada Student Loan Program (Federal) Ontario Student Loan Program (Provincial) Federal and Provincial grants OSAP is designed to assist eligible students who do not have the resources to meet the costs of post-secondary education. <> The funding is provided as a supplement -- not a replacement to the financial resources that students and family are expected to contribute. OSAP is funded by both the provincial and federal governments. With one application you are considered for a mix of non-repayable grants and loans both federally and provincially. Grants

29 How is OSAP aid determined?
Allowable Educational Costs Expected Financial Contribution Calculated Financial Need minus equals Tuition Compulsory fees Books & supplies Equipment Computer costs Living expenses Child care Travel Student contribution Parental income Spousal income (if applicable) Student & spousal assets Brooke OSAP calculates a students financial need by comparing “allowable educational costs” to the “expected contributions/ Resources” to determine if there is need Listed above are the items that OSAP takes into account when calculating “Costs” and “Resources”

30 OSAP Estimate Visit ontario.ca/osap to find out how much you could get in OSAP loans and grants. There is an online tool to estimate how much funding you could be eligible for on the Ministry website listed above. <> This is a good starting point right now for those that want to start creating a budget while waiting the 2017/18 OSAP application to be available.

31 Will OSAP cover my costs?
Projected costs for 8 months: $ 20,000 - $33,000 Maximum OSAP for 8 months: $15,800* Brooke Projected costs – living away from home Arts to Engineering When comparing that to the maximum OSAP funding, you can see that OSAP will not be enough to cover all of your educational expenses, especially for students in higher cost programs such as accounting, computer science, engineering and others. <> The shortfall can be made up by pulling on the other resources : Scholarships, Student Contributions, Family Contributions and RESP, Bursaries. Student Access Guarantee *single student for 2 school terms

32 “Free Tuition” Family income is less than $50,000
Provincial – Ontario Student Grant 100% grant (OSG). No loan Federal – Canada Student Grant The combination of these two grants should equal the average Arts/Sci tuition fee Unchanged. Mix of loans & grants Family income over $50,000 mix of loans & grants (provincial and federal) For students with family income less than $50, they will be assessed on the provincial portion of their funding for grants only <> The value of these grants will be enough to cover average tuition The FEDERAL side of the OSAP funding will remain unchanged. It will continue to be a mix of loans and grants. Students with family incomes above $50,000 will receive a mix of grants and loans both provincially & federally based on family size and income.

33 Other Funding Sources UW Bursary Assistance Work Study
Full-Time Part-Time International Work Study Canadian/PR Scholarship Database

34 Applying For OSAP - Apply online ontario.ca/osap
Students can apply for full-time terms, part-time terms and/or work terms 23% Increase in OSAP applications this year Students can choose to receive grant only Send students to our office at any time of the term– refer them to our website as well Brooke: Students can begin to apply for Fall OSAP when the application is available in April <> Again, we recommend you apply for OSAP by June 15 so that you can get documentation in on time and avoid funding delays in September. Also, the OSAP deadline needs to be met to be considered for the entrance bursary.

35 New for 17/18 Ontario Student Grant
Don’t need to declare RESP income on application Don’t need to declare pre-study and study period income (flat rate contribution) on application Indigenous Efforts – don’t need to claim band funding and no expected student contribution Net Billing Pilot (F’17) and Net Estimates (F’18) New Overpayment Policy – positive impact for students Repayment Income Threshold levels

36 Where we may connect Non-Degree/Post Degree Students
OSAP Satisfactory Academic Progress Probation Restriction OSAP Appeals Dropping Courses Remaining full-time Dropping to part-time Refunds OSAP does not normally fund non-degree or post degree. Student’s transferring from one faculty to another is ok – we look for a plan modification form or may need to reach out to the advisor. Post Degree - Makeup Year – defined as enrolling in courses that must be completed as a prerequisite for admission into a university granduate program or any second entry level degree program, usually lacking only a few courses OSAP probation – must successfully complete on average 60% of courses taken in a year for which they have been funded Pass/fail/incomplete/IP May appeal due to extenuating circumstances beyond their control Impact of drops – remaining full-time or dropping to part-time. Refunds for dropped courses show on Quest as a credit – refund amount will be returned to OSAP

37 Other Information OSAP life-time limits Term funding limits
Keeping previous loans in interest free status Students must be “fees arranged” before OSAP funding can be released Students up to Masters programs – 340 weeks Student in Doctorial Programs – 400 weeks (another 60 weeks) Students with Disabilities – 520 weeks Should be enough to fund an undergraduate, Masters and PhD program Limit of 10 terms to fund an undergraduate degree (periods of study plus 1) Limit the amount per term CSL -
