1
Anatomical Motions and Terminology
Unit 1 Miss Lamphere
2
Objectives Students will be able to:
Define terminology relative to anatomical direction. Identify terminology relative to anatomical direction. Demonstrate proper use of terminology relative to anatomical direction.
3
Beginning Terminology
Anterior/Ventral-front of the body Posterior/Dorsal-back of the body Superior-situated above Inferior-situated below Medial-to the middle Lateral-to the side Distal-located farthest away from the median plane or point of attachment
4
Beginning Terminology Con’t
Proximal-located closest to the median plane or point of attachment Plantar- Pertaining to the sole of the foot Palmar- Pertaining to the palm of the hand Prone-lying face down Supine-laying face up Deep-away from the surface Superficial-on or close to the surface
5
Flexion Def- Decrease in the angle between the bones forming a joint.
AKA - bending
6
Extension Def- the movement that increases the angle between the bones forming a joint AKA - straightening
7
Abduction Def- Movement of a body part away from the midline of the body.
8
Adduction Def- movement of a body part toward the midline of the body
9
Internal Rotation Def- Rotation along an axis that brings a part of the body more medially Done with 90% of shoulder rehabs
10
External Rotation Def- Rotation along an axis that moves a body part more laterally Done with 90% of shoulder rehabs
11
Plantarflexion Def- extension of the foot, toward the bottom surface
AKA – pointing your toes
12
Dorsiflexion Def- flexion of the foot, toward the top of the foot
13
Inversion Def- Turning inward, usually in reference to the foot/ankle
14
Eversion Def- turning outward, usually in reference to the foot/ankle
15
Supination Def- the turning of the palm or the hand face-up.
16
Pronation Def- the turning of the palm or the hand face-down
17
Circumduction Def- to revolve around an axis, where the proximal end of a limb is fixed and the distal end traces a circle
18
Lateral bending Def- Movement along the frontal plane toward either the left or right side. AKA - tilting
19
Elevation Def- the rise of a body part superiorly
20
Depression Def- the lowering of a body part more inferiorly
21
Radial Deviation Def- movement at the wrist, along the frontal plane, where the thumb moves laterally, or more toward the radial side of the arm
22
Ulnar Deviation Def- movement at the wrist, along the frontal plane, where the thumb moves medially or toward the ulnar side of the arm
