2 When and Where Began on February 21, 1916 and ended on December 18, Longest battle of WWI Took place on the Western Front between the German and French armies, on the hills of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north- eastern France The Germans Fifth Army attacked the defenses of the Fort of Verdun and the French Second Army on the river bank of Meuse

8 Impact and Significance
In a way a victory for France because the Germans were stopped from reaching Verdun Heavy Casualties, each side lost about 400K men (both sides started with about 1.2 million troops) One of the reasons the British started the Battle of the Somme (help take pressure off heavily drained French) French and German Armies significantly weakened
