Longest battle of WWI
Took place on the Western Front between the German and French armies, on the hills of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north- eastern France
The Germans Fifth Army attacked the defenses of the Fort of Verdun and the French Second Army on the river bank of Meuse

One road to enter Verdun from the outside
The French army was able to travel up this road carrying thousands of troops
This road, “Sacred Way”, helped the French successfully defend against the Germans

8. Impact and Significance
In a way a victory for France because the Germans were stopped from reaching Verdun
Heavy Casualties, each side lost about 400K men (both sides started with about 1.2 million troops)
One of the reasons the British started the Battle of the Somme (help take pressure off heavily drained French)
French and German Armies significantly weakened
