1 the practice of science: How do we conduct scientific investigations and interpret data?
SC7.N.1.6, 2.1,3.2

2 Bellwork You want to see which kind of baseball bat will hit the ball the farthest. Write a hypothesis in “if, then, because” form for this experiment. Indpendent variable = Dependent variable = Variables you need to control = Where should you conduct this experiment and why. Replication or repetition? 6. You go to a park 5 times and take notes on birds you see, then write up your notes. 7. Your friend goes to the same park and takes notes

3 The Practice of Science Review Stations
Go on to quizlet to complete vocab graphic organizer Sponge bob experiements task cards – identify variables, write hypothesis, analyze results. Graphing practice – create graph of data and draw conclusions.

4 Bellwork – Wednesday 9/3 You want to find out if a brand of fertilizer will help plants produce more flowers 5. Independent variable 6. Dependent variable 7. Hypothesis Describe and create an illustration of a scientific experiment to test your hypothesis

5 Conducting Scientific Investigations:
Are Elephants Afraid of Mice? Conducting Scientific Investigations: Watch the following Myth busters investigation. Use the worksheet to help you identify the parts of the mythbuster’s research and investigation..

6 Scientific method review stations
You have 10 minutes to complete the station you did not complete yesterday. Record answers on your answer sheet from yesterday or on the key terms paper. Both go in the 3rd tab of you binder. Completed Key terms will be due next week when we have the chapter test.

7 Can you write a clear lab procedure?

8

9 Bellwork On doc cam – sponge bob experiements

10 EQ: What deductions can be made from empirical evidence
OBJ: Use tables, graphs and models to represent, display and analyze empirical data

11 What is Empirical Evidence?
Empirical Evidence is the observations, measurements, and other types of data that people gather and test in scientific investigations

12 How do we organize empirical evidence
1. Tables: Help organize and record data measurements Contain rows, columns, labels and units Movie Preferences Type of Movie Number Action Comedy Drama Horror

13 2. Graphs Used to display data – type depends on what you want to show
Circle Graph Bar Graph Line Graph Shows parts of a whole Used to Display and compare data Shows a Change over time

14 Turn and Talk Which type of graph would be best to show our movie data.

15 What are the parts of a graph?
X Axis (This is for your independent variable)

16 ! Y Axis (This is for your dependent variable)

17 Create a Bar graph from our data
Don’t forget titles and axis labels.

18 Zombie graphing activity

19 Bellwork - Fri What is the question we are investigating?
Read through the lab report to answer the following. If you have left any of these blank, you are not ready to do the lab……You may just have to be an observer………… What is the question we are investigating? What will your hypothesis be – write it on lab How many brands of dish soap are we testing? What will we be measuring What units will we measure in How will we create the bubbles? How many trials will we do per brand? What kind of graph will you create to display your data? How many parts will your conclusion paragraph contain?

20 Bellwork - Monday Complete your bar graph and conclusion from your lab. Proofread to make sure you have all blanks in the lab filled in. Turn in your completed lab WITH YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME on top of your classes folder in the trays.
