A fixed resistor connected in series with the line (mains) input of a power supply.

Alternative Description Advantages of using a Fixed Resistor NTC A resistor which is higher in value when cool, and so reduces current at switch-on. A resistor works equally well if the system is switched off then back on immediately; an NTC does not protect the system until it’s had time to cool down. Soft-start Using a PSU circuit with controlled current. A resistor, even with a shorting relay, offers a far simpler and lower cost solution. Ceramic composition A technology with very high surge energy capacity. Composition resistors will not fuse even under extreme overload and so can get very hot in a fault condition. Varistor only Limits voltage spikes and often used with a resistor. When used before the varistor, a resistor enhances lightning strike protection and adds inrush and fault protection.
