Happy Thursday! Come in Quietly Pick up a C-Note paper (TOPIC: Weathering) Have your planner out for me to check Have your binder open to page 92
2
Rocks and Weathering Sec. 3.1
3
What do you know about weathering?
On the post it Notes on your desk, write at least one thing you would like know about weathering OR one thing you would like to know about it When you are finished, stick it on the window!
4
What Breaks down and Builds up Earth’s Surface?
Weathering, Erosion and Deposition act TOGETHER in a cycle that wears down and builds up Earth’s surface. Pg. 93 Let’s check it out!
5
What is Weathering, Erosion and Deposition?
W-The process that breaks down rock and other substances E- Process where bits of broken rocks are carried away D- agents of erosion deposit (or lay down) sediment.
6
What Causes Weathering?
Two Types of weathering: Physical (Or mechanical) Chemical
7
Natural Agents of Physical Weathering:
Freezing/Thawing Release of Pressure Plant Growth Animal Action Abrasion Pg 94-95
8
Look at the pictures on your desk
Look at the pictures on your desk. In your group, decide which one of these is which type of Physical weathering
14
Natural Agents of Chemical Weathering:
Water Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Living Organisms Acid Rain Pg
15
Water?? Yes! Water weathers some rocks by dissolving it! It can seep into the spaces in the rock.
16
Other Agents Oxygen: Oxygen gas in the air, Oxidation (rust)
Carbon Dioxide: Also in the air, dissolves in water to form Carbonic acid Living organisms: Lichens can produce weak acids to dissolve rocks Acid Rain: Pollution in the air react with water vapor in the in clouds- can cause rapid weathering

SO what is Weathering??? Was your post-it correct?
Did any questions get answered? Questions??
