1 Jeremiah Covenant For The Last Days
Look At The Book! Jeremiah Covenant For The Last Days

2 Jesus In The Prophecy Of Jeremiah
Written around 500 years before Jesus Joins other prophetic books which discuss the coming of Messiah Not as many as Isaiah, but very insightful Of special interest to us is a section in Jeremiah 31 which deals with terms for a new and final covenant with God. It was to replace all other covenants ever made. It was to be for the last days – and to remain in effect until the ends of time on Earth.

3 Behold! Days are coming! Jeremiah 31:27, 31 – “Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘ When I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast….Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah….” God planned a new covenant for the soon to arrive days.

4 To Be Days Of Blessing/Restoration
Vs. 27 – God promises to sow Israel and Judah with men and beasts. Indicated a future time of peace and prosperity Looked to a bright and bountiful future not at all marked by the poverty, distress, and attrition created by the present turmoil caused by Nebucchadnezzar.

5 To Be Days To Plant And Build
Vs “As I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to overthrow, to destroy and to bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares the Lord.” Reversal of ill fortunes and time of productivity and plenty.

6 To End A Bad Proverb Vs. 29 – “In those days they will not say again, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’” God’s judgment would come upon every sinner for the sin they committed, not national sins, or tribe sins. Proverb suggested that God’s patience would visit destruction on the children years later when they were grown, rather than on the fathers who were “eating sour grapes”.

7 Judgment For Each Individual
Rather than for the whole group. Vs. 30 – “But everyone will die for his own iniquity; each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge.” The new covenant would be individualistic: each individual in relationship with God through covenant. Each individual judged for his or her own sin. Each person punished for the sin they commit.

8 Days For The New Covenant
Vs “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah… Days are coming? What days? Hebrews 8:13 – “When He said, ‘a new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.”

9 Days For Spiritual Israel
Vs “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the city will be rebuilt for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.” Not physical Israel, but spiritual Israel is in view here.

10 Terms Of The New Covenant
Based firstly upon knowledge of God’s Law Vs …not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

11 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Not like Mosaic Law where covenant was non-consensual. Not like a breakable covenant as adultery against God, their husband.

12 Romans 7:4-7 “Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”

13 God’s Law Written In Their Hearts
2 Corinthians 3:3, “…manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts….but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

14 A Covenant By Which We Draw Near
James 4:8 – “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” Where God searches our hearts and minds Revelation 2:23 – “…and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.”

15 Based On Gospel, Not Birth
Vs. 34 indicates there will be no teaching your neighbor to know the Lord, because those who can come to God must know Him to obey Him. That is how believers have God’s word written on their hearts and minds.

16 A Covenant Based On True Forgiveness
Vs. 34 – “…for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from.”

17 A Promise For The Faithful
1John 1:7 -- … but if we walk in the Light as He Himself in in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
