1 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Physical Science Big Idea 13: Force and Changes Grade 1 Topic IV Change of Motion Open up Discovery Education on your Employee Portal and minimize so that the Discovery hyperlinks will open as you move through the power points. Division of Academics - Department of Science

2 Grade 1 Pacing guide Topic IV Change of Motion Benchmarks
SC.1.P.13.1 Demonstrate that the way to change the motion of an object is by applying a push or a pull. SC.1.N.1.1 Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explanations. SC.1.N.1.2 Using the five senses as tools, make careful observations, describe objects in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and motion, and compare their observations with others. SC.1.N.1.3 Keep records as appropriate – such as pictorial and written records – of investigations conducted. SC.1.N.1.4 Ask “how do you know” in appropriate situations. Division of Academics - Department of Science

3 What can you do to make an object move?
Give it a push or a pull!! Explore: Visit the school playground. Review the Push and Pull at Play activity students did from Topic III or explore. it for the first time. Explain/Evaluate: Review the students drawing from their Push and Pull at Play experience OR Have students draw pictures and write about their Push and Pull at Play experiences. What did you do to move the object in the activity we just did? Division of Academics - Department of Science

4 Division of Academics – Department of Science
Pushes and Pulls Explore/Explain: Ask students what happens when we push or pull an object? Discuss their answers. Have students predict.. What will happen when we change a force? (Push instead of pull, vice versa) Click on the link, Pushes and Pulls. Discuss what happened after activity. Division of Academics – Department of Science

5 What do we call a push or a pull that makes something move?
Forces Explore: Ask students what we call a push or a pull that makes something move? (A Force) Click on and play the link a push or a pull . Have students define forces (a push or a pull) in their notebook and draw some examples. Click on second link Forces For more explanation. ( Division of Academics - Department of Science

Forces and Movement Explore/Explain: Click on hyperlink: Forces and Movement Complete the activity and discuss with the students Division of Academics - Department of Science

7 Changing the Speed of Motion
Object What happened ? Green Car Traffic Cone Brick Wall Have you ever bumped toy cars while racing? If you have, you know that you can change how a toy car moves by applying force. Let’s learn how you can change the speed of motion in different ways. Changing the Speed of Motion Explore: Copy the Chart onto the whiteboard or poster paper. Record student responses as you proceed through the virtual lab that is linked at the bottom of the slide. Explain: Discuss the results from the lab. Have students explain why they got different results. Division of Academics - Department of Science

8 Force and Motion Review
Draw and name 5 examples: PUSH PULL Explain and Evaluate: Either as a class or individually have the students come up with five examples of a push and five examples of a pull. Discuss the examples and confirm whether they are a push or a pull. Division of Academics - Department of Science

9 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Connecting Learning: What happens when you push or pull an object? What happens when you push or pull an object strongly? What happens when you push or pull an object gently? What is a force? What are you wondering now about forces? Explain: Review: Students can sing the animated song from SF, Pull the Sled. If tape is not available, You can log into Log in. Click on the Grade 1 Take it to the Net. Select Games, Unit C Physical Science. See animated song, Pull the Sled under Chapter 9. Evaluation: Discuss Connecting Learning questions with students. Discovery: Force and Motion activity. Download student response sheet from Discover lab or put on board and discuss with students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

10 It’s a force called gravity.
What makes things fall? It’s a force called gravity. Explore: Hold up a ball and let it drop. Repeat with other objects. Then discuss What makes things fall? Tell students you are going to take them outside (playground with a slide if available) to see how gravity affects them when they play. When you get to the playground, have students sit together. Have one student throw a ball high up in the air and ask, “What pulled the ball back down to the ground?” If there is a slide have everyone watch as one student goes down the slide and ask, “What pulled him or her back down the slide?” continue to demonstrate with other things, being sure to use the word, “pull” so that students understand that gravity is a pulling force. You can also click on the link Gravity for a short Discovery video explanation on gravity.

11 Gravity is a force that is always pulling objects down.
What is gravity? Gravity is a force that is always pulling objects down. Try Discovery Interactive Book: Exploration: Gravity Explain and evaluate: Ask, “what is gravity?” Have students draw and write about examples of gravity in action from the book and/or from their own experiences in their science notebooks. Extension #1: If you have Discovery, click to play on the link in the slide for Exploration: Gravity. You can also put this interactive book link on your student computers for students to read again. This can be used as DI to meet individual needs for corrective feedback. Extension: #2: click on the link What is gravity? to play a free video that explain gravity at a grade 3 – 5 level.

12 Gravity (Sung to “London Bridge is Falling down”)
Gravity is pulling down, Pulling down, Pulling down. Gravity is pulling down All around you! Take a ball and toss it high. Will it stay in the sky? Gravity will pull it down All around you. Gravity is pulling down, Pulling down, Pulling down. Gravity is pulling down All around you! Jump up high and down you’ll go. There’s a force down below. All around you Engage: Sing the song together. Then sing it again acting it out. Explain and evaluate: Ask students to finish the sentence, “ Gravity pulls…” and create an illustration to go with it . Display all of the sentences and pictures on a bulletin board titled: “Gravity Pulls” for an interactive vocabulary word wall. Give corrective feedback as necessary.

13 Identify Vocabulary Pictures:
PUSH PULL GRAVITY Explain/evaluate:: Click for the picture. Ask students what vocabulary word they think it is. Click again for the answer. Force – Push Force – Gravity Force – Pull Sound Magnet Speed SPEED Division of Academics – Department of Science

Connected Learning What is a force? Answer: Force is a push or a pull that  may make something move. What is a push? Answer: Push is to use pressure against in order to move. 3. What is a pull? Answer: Pull is to take hold of (something) and use force to bring it nearer to oneself. 4. What is gravity? Answer: Gravity is a force that pulls   things toward the ground. Explain and Evaluate: Ask students questions and discuss responses. Students can make a foldable or a notebook entry to illustrate the words.. Division of Academics - Department of Science
