3 Other Qualifying Work Alaska fishing and why we are focusing on the industry We believe that there could be families who are coming back to Colorado to live until the fishing season begins again. The SEA wants to ensure that every eligible child is identified. Leave no Fish Unturned! 3

4 10/13/2018 Fishing Fishery is the term used to describe the different methods to harvest the different types of fish, areas where fish can be found, and the season for harvesting a certain type of fish. There is a session tomorrow March 5th regarding qualifying work. 4

5 Initial Processing NRG 2010 G20 & G21.
What does “initial processing” mean? The Department considers “initial processing” to be work that (1) is beyond the production stage of agricultural work and (2) precedes the transformation of the raw product into something more refined. It means working with raw agricultural or fishing products. Agricultural industries eligible under this definition: Taylor Farms, Fresh Express and Del Monte. What are examples of “initial processing” work in the poultry and livestock industries? For the purposes of the MEP, examples of “initial processing” work in the poultry and livestock industries include, but are not limited to: stunning; slaughtering; skinning; eviscerating; splitting carcasses; hanging; cutting; trimming; deboning; and enclosing the raw product in a container. Agricultural industries eligible under this definition: Two Bears Pet Food- Raw Meat Diets for Dogs. There are other dog food packing plants that we will continue to work on identifying. 5

For the purposes of the MEP, examples of “initial processing” work in the crop industry include, but are not limited to: cleaning; weighing; cutting; grading; peeling; sorting; freezing, and enclosing the raw product in a container. What are examples of “initial processing” work in the fishing industry? For the purposes of the MEP, examples of “initial processing” work in the fishing industry include, but are not limited to: scaling; cutting; dressing; and enclosing the raw product in a container. 6

7 Fishing Here are a few things we have learned about Alaska Fishing…
The Alaskan Seafood Industry is divided into five fisheries: herring, halibut, ground fish, crab and of course, salmon. The salmon industry is the most popular fishery out of Alaska. 9 Onshore Seafood Processing
Onshore seafood industry jobs in Alaska are almost entirely processing jobs. Processing plants exist in many different sizes and in several different capacities. Some are offshore vessels where the processing takes place, and others (the majority) are located on docks or piers with close access to ships. 10 Dairy Cows are milked twice per day on most farms. However, 10% increased milk production can be obtained by milking cows three times a day. The milking area is called “the milking parlor” 10

12 Qualifying Work Alpacas
The Alpaca industry is going into its 21st year in Colorado. Alpacas are raised for sport but also for their fleeces. According to the Alpaca Owners Association new alpaca farms are growing in Colorado. The SEA considers the production of alpacas for their fleece as a qualifying activity. It’s important that the recruiter document specifically that a worker is not involved with the production of alpacas for sport or competition. Llamas The Llama and Alpaca industry go hand in hand in Colorado. According to the “Rocky Mountain Llama and Alpaca Association the industry has slowly been growing since The Alpaca and Llama Association have partnered in an effort to promote camelids. The llama is considered to be a cousin of the alpaca and it too is raised for its fleece. The SEA considers the production of llamas for the use of fleece, a qualifying activity. 12

13 Beef Cattle In Colorado Cattle and Calves is the number one agricultural commodity with 2.6 million head of cattle in the State. The SEA considers working with beef such as raising; grading; feeding; herding; and slaughtering a qualifying activity for purposes of the MEP. 13

Temporary or Seasonal Honey Bee Farms can be considered temporary or seasonal Irrigating fields Seasonal Lamb Farm Raised for use of wool Loading trucks (fields, warehouse) Meat packing plants Mending and Building Fences- on farms, ranches or dairies Mushroom Plant Nurseries/green house (transplant, pruning) Sometimes nurseries and greenhouses have their own fields where they plant herbs and or flowers so this could also be categorized as Seasonal as well. 16

17 Qualifying Work 17 Piñon (pine nuts) Seasonal
Piñon grows wild in certain parts of Colorado there is a bidding process to pick and gather the Piñon when they fall off the pine tree. The time for harvest is about August - September depending on the cycles of the season’s (weather).
