1 Mary and the Interior Life
NCSU LYFE April 22, 2018

2 The New Eve “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Gn 3:15 The promise is of a New Adam and a New Eve bound up again with each other but this time the New Eve would be the mother of the New Adam Clearly Eve had an essential, even though secondary role in the first Covenant—clearly this new Eve that is spoken of in the Protoevangelium would play an even greater role—recall that the types of Scripture while they are sign they are always pointing to something greater The Coredemption of Mary is introduced in the Protoevangelium—this New Eve that crushes the head of the Serpent is so united to the Redeemer that it is she herself by the grace and power of the Son that crushes the head of the serpent The feminine ipsa is chosen by St Jerome and referred to 4 times in Ineffabilis Deus Properly speaking Eve prefigured Mary in the negative sense—in fact Eve was redeemed by Mary according to Irenaeus What are some of the parallels? Mother of all the living “Wedded” to the New Adam Gave the fruit of redemption to New Adam

3 The New Eve “On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples. When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "O Woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” Jn 2:1- “When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’” Jn 19:26-27 Clearly John understood her as the New Eve

4 The New Eve “For Eve, being a virgin and undefiled, conceiving the word that was from the serpent, brought forth disobedience and death; but the Virgin Mary, taking faith and joy, when the Angel told her the good tidings…answered, ‘Be it to me according to Thy word.’” Justin Martyr (c. 140) “And so the knot of Eye's disobedience received its unloosing through the obedience of Mary; for what Eve, a virgin, bound by incredulity, that Mary, a virgin, unloosed by faith.” (Irenaeus c160) This was the first connection that the Fathers made as well Irenaeus ordained by Polycarp who was a disciple of John Apostle

5 Mediatrix of All Graces?
“After the Mediator, you are the Mediatrix of the whole world”—St. Ephraem (4C) “[Mary is] the Redemptrix of Our Race.”—St. Catherine of Siena (14C) “[Mary is] the dispenser of all gifts which Jesus has acquired for us by His Death and His Precious Blood.”—Pope St. Pius X “[Mary] offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father”—Pius XII “Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked by the Church under the titles of Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Adjutrix, and Mediatrix.” –LG “All gifts which the Author of all good has decided to communicate to the unhappy progeny of Adam are, according to the Divine Providence, dispensed through the hands of the Virgin Mary.” —Pope Benedict XVI Mediation in general consists in a twofold movement—upwards towards God in prayer and downwards towards man in the distribution of God’s gifts St Thomas says that “there is no reason why there should not be, after Christ, other secondary mediators between God and men, who co-operate in uniting them in a ministerial and dispositive manner”—these mediators dispose men for the action of the principal mediator but always depend on His merits Mary’s universal mediation is always sub-ordinated to Christ’s and not co-ordinated—her mediation is not necessary only positively willed by God as a kind of radiation of the Savior’s mediation and of all radiations the most perfect The work of redemption proceeds entirely form God as First Cause of grace, entirely from Jesus as principal and perfect mediator and entirely from Mary as subordinate mediatrix—this cooperation is not like three men carrying an equally heavy load, each carrying his part but is more like a fruit that depends entirely on the tree and entirely from the branch Mary’s mediation just by intercession or does she transmit the graces as an instrumental cause (the way in which the Sacred humanity of Christ would be an instrumental cause of grace Mary not only obtains grace for us by her prayers but transmits them to us also by her action Once it is granted that angels and saints are physical secondary causes of miracles (say by saying a blessing for example) we can say that the Mother of God can do so to a greater degree

6 Why Does it Matter? “Ask your Holy Father to proclaim this dogma which the Lady is requesting…Once the dogma has been proclaimed, the Lady of All Nations will grant her blessing, the Lady of All Nations will grant peace. She will help you when this dogma has been proclaimed. Great things are at hand. The world is degenerating. Nations, remember the daily Miracle that the Lord Jesus Christ granted you!” Our Lady of All Nations, Amsterdam May 31,1955 If the Church declares a dogma for a name for Mary then she may be invoked under that name and powerful intercession follows Approved in 2002

7 Why do Catholics Worship Mary?
“…This very special devotion . . . differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this adoration." The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an ‘epitome of the whole Gospel,’ express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.” CCC 971 Latria dulia/hyperdulia LG 67 reminds the faithful “that practices and exercises of devotions toward Our Lady…are to be highly esteemed” The Protoevangelium contains the seeds of Marian devotion but it is Gal 4:4 which links Jesus and Mary definitively to the promise An attentive reading of the angelic salutation (Lk 1:28) leads one to the conclusion that Marian devotion before being practiced by me was already practiced in heaven St. Thomas says Mary surpassed the angels not only in grace (“Hail full of grace”) but also in familiarity with God (“the Lord is with you”) Marian devotion is a divine institution at the foot of the Cross and not just a counsel in the Gospel God wished to bring about the Incarnation by means of a birth and not a creation so that the hypostatic union creates an order with two members In essence there are three orders of reality which are irreducible—nature, grace and hypostatic order The cultus of the Virgin Mary does not merely differ in degree from the cultus of the other saints but also in kind (hyperdulia vs dulia) There is a necessity of devotion to Our Lady that does not exist among the other Blesseds St. Louis de Montfort calls it a “hypothetical” (meaning God could have done it another way but He willed it so) necessity A hypothetical necessity is one whose contrary does not imply a contradiction (this is why LG 60 can say “the Blessed Virgin’s saving influence on men originates not in any inner necessity but from the divine good pleasure” but not be a contradiction to what St. Louis said)

8 The Rosary “The Rosary is my favorite prayer. A marvelous prayer! Marvelous in its simplicity and its depth. …Against the background of the words Ave Maria the principal events of the life of Jesus Christ pass before the eyes of the soul. They take shape in the complete series of the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries, and they put us in living communion with Jesus through – we might say – the heart of his Mother. At the same time our heart can embrace in the decades of the Rosary all the events that make up the lives of individuals, families, nations, the Church, and all mankind. Our personal concerns and those of our neighbor, especially those who are closest to us, who are dearest to us. Thus the simple prayer of the Rosary marks the rhythm of human life”. Pope St. John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae (RVM), 2 In many ways the Rosary is meant to be a contemplation of the life of Jesus through Mary’s eyes—JPII called it “A Compendium of the Gospel Popes have praised the Rosary in more than 280 Papal documents

9 The Rosary “With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.” Pope St. John Paul II, RVM,1 Emphasis on School of Mary and Abundant Grace…

10 School of Mary: History of the Rosary
“Wonder not that you have obtained so little fruit by your labors. You have spent them on barren soil, not yet watered with the dew of Divine grace. When God willed to renew the face of the earth, He began by sending down on it fertilizing rain of the Angelic Salutation. Therefore preach my psalter composed of 150 Angelic Salutations and fifteen Our Fathers, and you will obtain an abundant harvest.” Instructions by the Blessed Mother to St. Dominic Developed over time Monks recited 150 Psalms-at he end of the Psalm sometimes would read Luke 1:28(greeting of angel) to remind them that the Psalms are fulfilled in Christ Poor could not afford nor educated enough Poor Man’s Psalter-150 Paternosters-beads help to remember 1208 Dominic apparition-Dominicans key in promoting whatever the true story Add Elizabeth’s greeting and the name of Jesus to the prayer and then begin saying 150 of them 15th century 2nd half of prayer is added and then the mysteries were added in the 16th century Pope St. Pius V approved officially in 1569

11 The Hail Mary “The repetition of the Hail Mary in the Rosary gives us a share in God's own wonder and pleasure: in jubilant amazement we acknowledge the greatest miracle of history. Mary's prophecy here finds its fulfilment: ‘Henceforth all generations will call me blessed’ (Lk 1:48).”  RVM, 33 Two ways to pray Repetition-Center of prayer is the name of Jesus. We repeatedly say the name of our Beloved Not as a superficial mechanical exercise, but with tender love so that it becomes “the heartbeat of the entire Rosary”

12 Mysteries of the Rosary
“…namely the element of contemplation. Without this the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation is in danger of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas and of going counter to the warning of Christ: "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words" (Mt. 6:7)…” Pope Paul VI Marialis Cultus, 47 Not only do we say the prayers I mentioned, but we are called to contemplate a different aspect of Christ’s life and works of salvation The prayers then are the body, while the mysteries are the soul PJP2 calls it a compendium of the entire Gospel because it presents us with images for God’s plan of redemption

13 “Abundant Grace” Battle of Lepanto—October 7, 1571
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan—August 1945 Philippines—February 25, 1986 Blessed Bartolo Longo—1860“Whoever spreads the Rosary is saved!”. Emphasis on Power of Rosary—it literally changes the world Lepanto—emphasis on timing Pius V 1569 Don Juan of Austria, Cross vs Crescent Moon, how they battled, miraculous change in the wind allowed the men rowing to come up on the deck and fight, stop march to Rome Jesuit House in Hiroshima “living the message of Fatima”—8 city blocks Franciscan House in Nagasaki behind the crest of a hill The tanks were trying to penetrate the crowd. The people were praying and showing their ROSARIES. That is when, according to these soldiers, the Marines who were riding on top of the tanks, the so-called Loyalists (to dictator Ferdinand Marcos); they saw up in the clouds the form of a Cross. he many sisters had tried to stop them, but they (the soldiers) told me they had already decided to obey instruction and push through. Then a beautiful lady appeared to them. I don’t know if she appeared in the sky or was standing down on the ground. So beautiful she, and her eyes were sparkling. The beautiful lady spoke to them in this way: “DEAR SOLDIERS, STOP! DO NOT PROCEED ! DO NOT HARM MY CHILDREN!” When they heard these words, the soldiers put down everything. They came down from the tanks and they joined the people. So, that was the end of the Loyalists.” (Jaime Cardinal Sin, February 25, 1986) In 1986, the family of nations watched the Filipinos in great awe as we toppled the dictator and stopped the tanks’ with bare hands’ and on our Knees’. All the ends of the earth have seen the Power of the Rosary, the Power of prayer, the Power of GOD. The two revolutions teach us that if we, the people of God, turn to the Lord, pray and do penance, He will hear our prayers and restore dignity and heal our land. More Powerful than funds are Prayers. More effective than strategic planning are ‘fasting’ and sacrifices.’ Mightier than military force is the mighty Power of a vigilant people. Indeed when we give our best to the Lord, and leave the rest to His Providence, the Lord always responds.” (Jaime Cardinal sin, January 24,2001) BBL—avowed Satanist  "As I pondered over my condition, I experienced a deep sense of despair and almost committed suicide. Then I heard an echo in my ear of the voice of Friar Alberto repeating the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary: 'If you seek salvation, promulgate the rosary. This is Mary's own promise.' These words illumined my soul. I went on my knees. 'If it is true. I will not leave this valley until I have propagated your rosary.'"

14 “Why Not Try It?” The family that prays together stays together. The Holy Rosary, by age-old tradition, has shown itself particularly effective as a prayer which brings the family together. Individual family members, in turning their eyes towards Jesus, also regain the ability to look one another in the eye, to communicate, to show solidarity, to forgive one another and to see their covenant of love renewed in the Spirit of God…. without prejudice to the Rosary's basic structure, there is nothing to stop children and young people from praying it – either within the family or in groups – with appropriate symbolic and practical aids to understanding and appreciation. Why not try it? Pope St. John Paul II, RVM,41-42

15 The Brown Scapular “Sacramentals do not confer the grace of the Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do, but by the Church’s prayer they prepare us to receive grace and dispose us to cooperate with it. For well-disposed members of the faithful, the liturgy of the sacraments and sacramentals sanctifies almost every event of their lives with the divine grace which flows form the Paschal mystery of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. From this source all sacraments and sacramentals draw their power.” CCC 1670 The Brown Scapular is a reminder of the saving grace of Christ and like all sacramentals it does not mediate the saving grace to us but prepares us and disposes us—the actual grace of final perseverance is won for us on the Cross It is because in establishing (or blessing) a sacramental, the Church acts as an underwriter by attaching the prayer of the entire Church to that of the individual. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful indeed (James 5:16), but the prayer of a righteous man joined to the prayer of Christ’s Mystical Body carries with it divine assurance to be heard (c.f. Mt 18:19).

16 The Brown Scapular “The sign of the Scapular points to an effective synthesis of Marian spirituality, which nourishes the devotion of believers and makes them sensitive to the Virgin Mother’s loving presence in their lives. The scapular is essentially a “habit.” …Therefore two truths are evoked by the sign of the Scapular: on the one hand, the constant protection of the Blessed Virgin, not only on life’s journey, but also at the moment of Passing into the fullness of eternal glory; on the other, the awareness that devotion to her cannot be limited to prayers and tributes in her honor of certain occasions, but must become a “habit,” that is, a permanent orientation of one’s own Christian conduct, woven of prayer and interior life, through frequent reception of the sacraments and the concrete practice of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. In this way, the Scapular becomes a sign of the “Covenant” and reciprocal communion between Mary and the faithful…” Pope Saint John Paul II JPII reminds us that the Scapular is a “habit” and thus devotion cannot be limited to just prayers and tribute but must be a “habit. That is a personal orientation of one own Christian conduct woven of prayer and interior life, through frequent reception of the Sacraments and the concrete practice of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. In this way the scapular becomes a sign of the “covenant” and reciprocal communion between Mary and the Faithful.” it takes the form of two long, undecorated panels of brown cloth joined at the shoulders and falling, one to the front and one to the back. For the laity it takes the form of a two smaller pieces of brown or dark cloth, preferably plain, joined over the shoulder by ribbons, and falling, one to the back, the other to the front.

17 The Brown Scapular "Take this Scapular, it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace. Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire…Wear it devoutly and perseveringly. It is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life." Conditions attached to the Brown Scapular: Wear the scapular at all times Observe chastity according to one’s state in life Recite the Little Office of Our Blessed Mother (Rosary, with permission from a priest, can be substituted) A person who wears the scapular and practices the spirituality of the Carmelite Order has an affiliation, loose as it may be, to the Carmelite family and so shares in the graces traditionally associated with the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. However, simply to wear the scapular without accepting the responsibilities attached to it would be to reduce this precious sacramental to the status of a charm or good-luck piece. The devils revealed to Francis of Yepes, the brother of St. John of the Cross that three things especially tormented them. The first is the NAME OF JESUS; the second, the NAME OF MARY; and third, THE BROWN SCAPULAR OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL. "Take off that habit," they cried to him, "which snatches too many souls from us. All those clothed in it die piously and escape us.“ The Sabbatine Privilege is based on the Papal Bull issued on March 3, 1322 by Pope John XXII. This Privilege was approved and confirmed by many popes including St. Pius V. It essentially says that those who wear the Scapular and fulfill two other conditions can obtain early liberation from Purgatory, through the special intercession of the Virgin Mary, on the day consecrated to her, Saturday.

18 First Five Saturdays Confess and receive Holy Communion
Recite the Rosary "Keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary." With the intention of making reparation. Our Lady visits Sr. Lucia in Ponteverda Spain because she promised to explain the Communion of Reparation of the July 13th apparition to her Story of Jesus checking in with Sr. Lucia appearing as a little child that would not pray the Hail Mary so she tells Him to go to the Church and ask the Heavenly Mother for the Child Jesus—he returns and she asks Him if he did it to which He replied “And have you spread through the world what the heavenly Mother requested of you?” Our Blessed Lord answered that question when He appeared to Sr. Lucia May 29, He explained that it was because of five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, namely: blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception, against her perpetual virginity, against the divine and spiritual maternity of Mary, blasphemies involving the rejection and dishonoring of her images, and the neglect of implanting in the hearts of children a knowledge and love of this Immaculate Mother. Mary asked Jesus for this to forgive those who “had the misfortune of offending her”

19 Marian Consecration “Of the essence of motherhood is the fact that it concerns the person. Motherhood always establishes a unique and unrepeatable relationship between two people: between mother and child and between child and mother. Even when the same woman is the mother of many children, her personal relationship with each one of them is of the very essence of motherhood...It can be said that motherhood ‘in the order of grace’ preserves the analogy with what ‘in the order of nature" characterizes the union between mother and child. In the light of this fact it becomes easier to understand why in Christ's testament on Golgotha his Mother's new motherhood is expressed in the singular, in reference to one man: ‘Behold your son.’” Belief in all that we have said has practical consequences—namely devotion to Mary Like other virtues true devotion grows in us by degree—(1)praying devoutly to Mary from time to time like saying the Angelus (2) more perfect sentiments of veneration, confidence and love which often manifests itself in a daily recitation of the Rosary (3) the soul gives of itself completely so as to belong to Jesus through Mary

20 Marian Consecration (cont.)
“It can also be said that these same words fully show the reason for the Marian dimension of the life of Christ's disciples. This is true not only of John, who at that hour stood at the foot of the Cross together with his Master's Mother, but it is also true of every disciple of Christ, of every Christian. The Redeemer entrusts his mother to the disciple, and at the same time he gives her to him as his mother. Mary's motherhood, which becomes man's inheritance, is a gift: a gift which Christ himself makes personally to every individual. The Redeemer entrusts Mary to John because he entrusts John to Mary...And all of this can be included in the word "entrusting." Such entrusting is the response to a person's love, and in particular to the love of a mother.” RM,45 Note the word entrusts and how this sets up a special kind of relationship that is entirely personal. Like all personal relationships it requires a response—”namely taking her into his own home” It is a divine institution While it is true that no one consecrates himself and it is God who consecrates the common usage in the Church is that it means making a sacred commitment—but this remains an obstacle along with the fact that it is baptismal and how one can consecrate someone else Even if it is only God who can consecrate, it is an act of love and therefore like all acts of love requires a certain reciprocity—to say we are consecrating ourselves is to say that we are entering into this partnership is a solemn way One can consecrate others insofar as they have authority over them No one can confer a formal consecration against the will of another but he may confer a votive consecration which is in essence a prayer of intercession that expresses the desire of God that all men be saved

21 Marian Consecration “This devotion consists then in giving ourselves entirely to the Blessed Virgin, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her.” St. Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort, True Devotion to Mary (TDM), No. 121. Mary’s role in our consecration is based upon the fact that she is the most perfectly consecrated creature, sharing the greatest intimacy of love with God—therefore she is (1) the prototype of consecration and the perfect example of what one consecrated to God looks like (2) according to her vocation as Mother she continues to aid, assist and protect us and because of her perfect communion with God she is the most effective intercessor Because she gives all that she has to God He, in turn, not being outdone in generosity, shares His power with her We give everything to her including our exterior goods so that we may make proper use of them, our bodies and our senses that they may remain pure, our spiritual possessions (virtues and merits)

22 What Does It Mean? Consecration means…
in the proper sense only to God and by God baptism which represents a germ needed because God does nothing without us and therefore it is necessary we ask for consecration the best way to do this is through Mary By Baptism we become another Beloved Disciple and are committed to Mary by divine institution To say we are consecrated to Mary when truly we can only be consecrated to God is meant only by way of analogy (a likeness in difference)—what is common to the two analogates is a recognition that we are dependent upon them “We give ourselves to Mary because Jesus chose her as the perfect means to unite himself to us and unite us to him.”

23 What Does It Mean? “Consecrating ourselves to Mary means accepting her help to offer ourselves and the whole of mankind to Him who is holy, infinitely holy; it means accepting her help – by having recourse to her motherly heart which, beneath the Cross was open to love for every human being, for the whole world – in order to offer the world, the individual human being, mankind as a whole, and all the nations to Him who is infinitely holy.” -Pope St. John Paul II, Homily at Fatima May 13, 1982 The act of consecration consists in promising to Mary to have constant filial recourse to her and to live in habitual dependence upon her

24 Fruits of this Consecration
“This devotion gives us up altogether to the service of God, and makes us imitate the example of Our Blessed Lord who willed to be ‘subject’ in regard to His Blessed Mother. It obtains for us the special protection of Mary, who purifies our good works and adorns them when she offers them to her Divine Son. It leads us to union with Our Blessed Lord; it is an easy, short , perfect and safe way. It confers great interior freedom, procures great benefits for our neighbor, and is an excellent means of assuring our perseverance.” St. Louis de Montfort, TDM

25 How Do We Do It? Step 1: Choose a Consecration Date Marian Feast Day

26 Preparation for Consecration
First comes a 12-day preparation period that consists of emptying oneself of the spirit of the world in penance and mortification. The first week focuses on offering up our prayers and devotions for the purpose of coming to understand ourselves and our sins; Second week the goal is to better understand the Blessed Virgin; Third week, we seek to better understand Christ through meditation Now begins the 33-day period of exercises. St. Louis-Marie breaks these days into sections of days, each section having its own prayers, and each particular day having its own brief readings with which to fill the mind for that day (the readings come from Sacred Scripture, "The Imitation of Christ," and "True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary"). Don't just read the readings, internalize them; don't let your lips just mouth the prayers, truly pray them. For those 12 days, we pray the Veni Creator, the Ave Maris Stella, the Magnificat, and the Glory Be. Then follow 3 weeks, each week having a specific focus. Week 1 ; humility is the key, and the prayers the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Litany of Loreto, and the Ave Maris Stella help us. 2nd Week--we pray the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Litany of Loreto, the Ave Maris Stellis, the prayer to Mary by St. Louis-Marie, and 5 decades of the Holy Rosary each day for assistance. and the Litany of the Holy Ghost, the Ave Maris Stella, and the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, Montfort's prayer to Jesus, and the prayer O Jesus Living in Mary.

27 Day of Consecration Fast, give alms or offer a votive candle for the good of another Do some spiritual penance and approach consecration in the spirit of mortification. Go to Confession (up to 8 days prior) Receive Communion with the express intention of giving yourself to Jesus, as a slave of love, by the hands of Mary. Pray the words of the consecration Try to receive Communion per the method described in the Supplement of the book, "True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary" above. .

28 After the Consecration
Keep praying to develop a "great contempt" for the spirit of this world Maintain a special devotion to the Mystery of the Incarnation Frequently recite the Ave, Rosary, and the Magnificat Recite, every day if it is not inconvenient, the "Little Crown of the Blessed Virgin" Do everything through, with, in and for Mary for the sake of Jesus, with the prayer, "I am all thine Immaculate One, with all that I have: in time and in eternity" Associate yourself with Mary in a special way before, during, and after Communion Renew the consecration once a year on the same date chosen above, and by following the same 33-day period of exercises. If desired, also renew the consecration monthly with the prayer, "I am all thine and all I have is thine, O dear Jesus, through Mary, Thy holy Mother." (e.g., through meditation; spiritual reading; focusing on Feasts centering around the Incarnation, such as the Annunciation and the Nativity, etc.)

29 A Sign of the End Times “that this will happen especially towards the end of the world, and indeed soon, because Almighty God and his holy Mother are to raise up great saints who will surpass in holiness most other saints as much as the cedars of Lebanon tower above little shrubs…These great souls filled with grace and zeal will be chosen to oppose the enemies of God who are raging on all sides. They will be exceptionally devoted to the Blessed Virgin. Illumined by her light, strengthened by her food, guided by her spirit, supported by her arm, sheltered under her protection, they will fight with one hand and build with the other. With one hand they will give battle, overthrowing and crushing heretics and their heresies, schismatics and their schisms, idolaters and their idolatries, sinners and their wickedness. With the other hand they will build the temple of the true Solomon and the mystical city of God, namely, the Blessed Virgin, who is called by the Fathers of the Church the Temple of Solomon and the City of God.” St. Louis de Montfort
