Aluminium &Aluminium Alloys Properties: (i)It is ductile and malleable due to FCC structure. (ii)It is light in weight (iii)It has very good thermal and electrical conductivity (iv)It has excellent ability of getting alloyed with other elements. (v)It has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance. (vi)Corrosion product of aluminium i.e. Al 2 O 3 is non-toxic which makes the metal suitable for food packaging purpose. (vii) The metal and its alloys can be anodized for decoration and increasing corrosion resistance. (viii) It has very low ductile –brittle transition temperature. (ix) It is non magnetic and non sparking in nature and has low neutron absorption coefficient. (x)It is powerful deoxidiser (xi)It is a powerful grain refiner. (xii)It is used in permanent magnets, shape-memory alloys due to its many other peculiar properties.

Types of Aluminium Alloys 1.)Aluminium-Silicon and Aluminium-Silicon- Copper alloys 2.)Aluminium-Magnesium alloys(Magnalium) 3.)Aluminium-Copper alloys 4.)Y-alloy(LM 14) 5.)Hinduminium-RR 350

Aluminium-Silicon These are widely used in the castings because of their excellent fluidity In general as silicon percentage increases it results in better mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance

Aluminium-Silicon-Copper alloys In this the silicon content ids reduced and is replaced by the copper at various amounts Reduction in Si percentage reduces the fluidity and Cu content increases the machinability

Aluminium- Magnesiumalloys(Magnalium) Adding 0.5 to 5 % Mg results in very high resistance to corrosion, high machinability, and surface finish App: Marine applications, aircraft, automobile components, dairy equipment

Al- Cu Alloys ( 4.5%Cu) Produces very good strength after precipitation hardening Has moderate corrosion resistance App: Aircraft castings, some highly stressed parts

Y-alloy(LM 14) Composition: ( 4% Cu, 2% Ni, 1.5% Mg) This is a high strength alloy and has excellent ability to retain strength at elevated temperatures It has fairly good corrosion resistance App: Pistons and cylinder heads in engines

Hinduminium Composition is 5% Cu, 1.5Ni, Mn, Ti, Co, Zr It is superior to Yalloy App: Aeroengines

Titanium α- titanium alloys Near α- titanium alloys α-β titanium alloys β titanium alloys

Properties of titanium High temperature strength Creep resistance Corrosion resistance Expensive
