1 What Exactly Is Intermodal Transportation? In the busy industry of transportation, there are several ways to move your goods to various parts of the world. The backbone of the industry when it comes to moving products includes trucks, ships aŶd traiŶs/railroads. It’s a pretty huge uŶdertakiŶg to ŵoǀe goods from your ǁarehouse to coŵŵercial or persoŶal custoŵers. This is ǁhy you’ll Ŷeed to haǀe great orgaŶizatioŶal skills aŶd kŶoǁ hoǁ to coordiŶate your shipŵeŶts, especially if you’re usiŶg different modes of transport. The intermodal container is one of the innovations that has changed the way that products are shipped around the world, which is why intermodal transportation is so important. Intermodal transportation is the utilization of special containers that are designed to move large amount of cargo on freight trains, ships and trucks. These containers are large and rectangular and are secured to trailers that are designed to hold them. Intermodal containers are extremely durable and made of steel. They are built so they can safely and effectively be transferred between different types of transportation. So, if you need to ship something internationally or from one part of the country to the other, you can rest assured that your products are safe when you use the containers that are designed for intermodal transportation. While this type of shipping has experienced a number of innovations over the years to make the trailers and containers stronger and more reliable, the overall concept of intermodal transportation has actually been around for quite some time. This system dates all the way back to the 18 th century and is even older than railways. Some of the first containers that were used for this type of shipping date back to England, as early as the 1780s. Years later, in the 1950s, the United States Department of Defence developed an intermodal container made of steel. This significantly changed the way that freight was transported and made it easier for businesses of various sizes to be more efficient. In the following decades, business owners began to use these specialized containers more and more, and intermodal traffic on the railways tripled between the years of 1980 and 2002. The starting and ending points of intermodal travel are usually routes on the ocean or rails; in between these routes, large trucks are used to transport the freight. Trucks that run between ocean freights are referred to as drayage, and these trucks also transport goods between shipping docks and rail terminals. There are a number of variables that go into successful intermodal transportation, but the most common scenario is when a truck moves an empty container to a shipper to pick up a load of goods. The equipment is then loaded on a freight, where a truck moves the items to a railroad yard. The goods are transported by train to their destination and removed from the train and put on a truck. The last truck drives the products to the customer. This is usually beneficial for all involved parties, such the process is highly efficient.
