Work & Power
3
Work : one definition Energy used to move something
Work = force applied x distance moved ***force and distance must be in same direction in order to calculate the work done.
5
Work is measured in Units of energy called Joules
1Joule = the amount of energy needed to apply 1newton of force over 1 meter’s distance 1J = 1Nm (1Joule = 1newton*meter)
6
Power = RATE at which work is done How fast work is done
Power = work/time or…. Power = (force * distance)/time
7
Power is measured in Watts
Light bulbs energy output is measured in watts so are light bulbs doing work? Yes. Work is done anytime energy is converted from one form to another.
8
In a light bulb Electricity is converted to light Brighter bulbs convert more electricity/sec More work done/sec = higher wattage =more power
9
So….. Work = force applied over distance And
Work = energy being changed from one form to another
10
SO… Power = how fast work is done Power = how fast energy is converted
and Power = how fast energy is converted Watts measure how much work/sec or how much energy converted /sec
