1 Product Design Lesson objective to be able to identify key reasons why products have evolved over time

2 Questions Why do you think designers improve products?
If I said ‘continuous improvement’ would you know what this means? Can you name several factors that have helped to improve products? Lesson objective - to be able to identify key reasons why products have evolved over time

3 Manufacturing has improved Selection of materials
Years of development and innovation has culminated in the modern world we know as today Manufacturing has improved Selection of materials The way society has changed and the market need for goods has determined the changes Lesson objective - to be able to identify key reasons why products have evolved over time

4 Task 1 – write up notes One off prototype
A full size see-saw prototype. Creating a one-off prototype can speed up the design process and avoid pitfalls later in production. 1:100 scale car patterns ready for casting

5 Task 2 – find out what this means - Bespoke
Somerset Furniture Designer Penny Price offers a bespoke furniture design service throughout the Somerset area, below is an example of some of the bespoke furniture made by Penny Price. bespoke; bespoken; tailor-made; made-to-order; tailored

6 Task 3 – write down notes from this slide - Batch production
Sometimes batch production is necessary when a manufacturer is producing similar things, but with variants. For instance, if you manufacture two colours of the same shoe, you probably use batch production. Any dyeing of leather or fabric can’t apply to the whole set of shoes you want to manufacture, since they’re different colours. This can mean stopping in between each batch to change or clean machines, or prepare to add new dyes for the next variation.

7 Improving our standard of living
Manufacturing has created a mass-production market What do you think mass production means? Lesson objective - to be able to identify key reasons why products have evolved over time

8 mass-production market task 4 write down notes
The production of large quantities of a standardized article (often using assembly line techniques)

9 Social factors have an impact on the products we use
Write this down - Developments in technology have affected materials and manufacturing. New materials have been produced, and the way we make products has changed Social factors have an impact on the products we use Products for a ‘greener’ future are also being developed because of market demand

10 People demand ‘continuous improvement’
The fourth generation monochrome iPod-July June 2005 The first generation iPod mini-January February 2005 Lesson objective - to be able to identify key reasons why products have evolved over time

11 Task 5 - Now research on the Internet products that have improved over many years due to market demand Task 6 What does market push means? What does market demand mean? What does supply and demand mean? What are standard components, find out? What is a continuous production line? what does ‘Commercial Viability’ mean? what is a ‘Product launch’?
