1 SmartMove Driver Training
May 2015 Bill Cumpston

2 Handout Handouts are available.
Probably won’t make much sense now. Look at it again when you have a quiet period after having used the system.

3 SmartMove main features
Uses mobile phone network. Does NOT use radio. Vehicles linked whenever there is coverage Taxi position is obtained from GPS (global positioning system) satellites. Reported to server. Computer decides which car to give the job to and makes an offer. No bidding; no reporting position; don’t know what other work is available. Caller makes a call Operator uses booking system to record details Jobs held in a database accessible from the internet. Automatic dispatching system matches jobs to taxis Taxi is offered job. Uses data links over cellular network. No infrastructure costs – uses commercially available technology Have two SIM cards in car – will switch carrier if necessary Other methods for booking taxi are available.

4 Digitax screen and computer
Main components (Digitax) Digitax screen and computer Antenna Screen/computer at the front of the car. Touch sensitive. Includes a microphone and speaker for talking to the base operator. Panic button near steering column. Must be held in for 2 seconds. Antenna normally on dashboard or on windscreen Panic button Meter

5 Logon Enter authority number (touch/tap gently)
Make yourself available You may get a warning that your licence is expiring. Don’t ignore it! Authority number often used to identify the driver. Numbers should not be shared. Used for police reports and accounting. Need to be connected to server before you can logon. Need green square. Passwords (PIN number) can be set. Need if using the driver app.

6 Meter entry Enter values requested. Not all fleets use this.

7 Job Offer Offer made automatically if a vacant car available
Must be accepted in 15 seconds Short time penalty if not accepted System is fair Car eligible for work only when meter is off Job offered automatically, but only when meter is off. Avoids OH&S issues – drivers do not use the system whilst driving Press the thumbs-up button to accept offer. Details will be given after the offer is accepted. Deliberate – to stop drivers “cherry-picking” work. Make sure you accept the offer even if you are busying finishing with last passenger. If offer is not accepted then a short time penalty is applied – normally 30 seconds. Also go to the bottom of the queue. This is not a problem if you get walk-up at the same time as an offer – the penalty will have finished before the job is finished. Computer is fair in allocation of work. Status changes to “booked” when “accept” pressed. No more offers will come.

8 Job Details Supplied when job accepted Previous jobs
No show No penalty Resubmit Long time penalty Previous jobs Driver information More details Get job details once offer is accepted. Use “No show” if passenger can’t be found. Job is not offered to anyone else. No penalty. Use “Resubmit” if you want to give the job to someone else for some reason. Get long time penalty (eg 2 minutes). If details are wrong need to contact base; will be changed in future. Can review details of past few jobs. Status changes to “engaged” when meter turned on. No offers will come until meter goes off.

9 Navigation Use to get directions to pick up address. Uses learnt addresses. Updates as you move along Can get detailed maps Use compass needle for distance Map is available if required.

10 Fare Payment Need to record how fare was paid
Details recorded to help with bookkeeping Normally use 100% cash or 100% credit buttons Can accept job but don’t get details until finished Press Done when “To pay” value is zero. Normally the fare is read directly from the meter. You need to record how fare was paid.

11 Fare Value normally read from meter Can enter value on screen
Shows on right hand side You can set the fare and add extras if required.

12 Subsidy Used to record part payment on subsidy scheme
Set lift fee option if it applies Enter voucher number if needed Some of the payment may be with the Government subsidy scheme

13 Account work Used to record (part) payment on account
Set account and reference numbers if necessary Change amount if necessary Press Accept If using an account you must record the account name.

14 Statistics Lists number of vacant cars in each zone
Has more than one page Also shows number of jobs waiting Use the zone statistics to see where other vacant cars are. Consider going somewhere else. Have more than one page.

15 Book here Use to make a booking Pick up address is current location
Set correct options and time You can create a booking in the car. Some fleets allow the driver to reserve the booking

16 Operator requests Users to request voice connection
Urgent — urgent request Job — new job Query — question about job Other — other request Panic button. No jobs until reset. Can request call to base. Same as hands-free voice call with mobile phone. Operator has to accept request.

17 Plot destination Available only after job started (meter on)
Press Zones and set destination zone Press signpost Job may be held Useful only when no vacant cars in area If the meter is on you can tell the computer where you are going. Prevents vacant car being sent to an area if a booking is made. Note: job is not held for the car. If a vacant car is available it will be given the work. Normally only used when travelling to an area where there are unlikely to be other vacant cars.

18 Messages Shows recently received messages
Flashes if new or unanswered message May need to give yes/no answer Messages can be sent at any time. The operator may ask for a Yes/No answer. Typical uses: Flight changes Volunteer jobs General query (e.g. anyone seen ….)

19 Out of car alert Set your own mobile number
Tells system you’re away from car Use it whenever you want to leave the car Very popular feature Computer rings phone when a job offer is made. DON’T ANSWER the call.

20 Test panic button Use this page to test that your panic button works.
Touching the button should light up the first icon Holding the button should light up the second icon. The third will light up when the computer responds. You must reset the alarm.

21 Cover Applies for jobs not normally offered (too far away)
Register and work may be offered No penalty for resubmitting. Won’t be offered again. Automatically deregistered if offer not taken Have option to see list and bid “Cover” extends the area where car is considered for work. Normally get work if you are in a zone being considered for the job. (Rules coming later) With “cover” you are considered for work further away.

22 Status indicators (Digitax)
Must have server to operate. You can’t login or get work if the server is not connected. Occasional drop-outs are normal. System will reconnect automatically. Can also drop-out if out of coverage. GPS satellites provide position. If position cannot be obtained then last known zone is used. Base operator can change if necessary. Can take up to 15 minutes to reestablish position. Dome light shows if meter is off. Light goes out if meter is on. Will not get job offer if meter is on. Panic sign shows if panic button is pressed. Must be cleared by base operator.

23 Screen controls

24 Dispatching When job waiting in a zone
Look for car waiting longest in that zone (normally queue position #1) Look for car that has plotted into area Enlarge area. Look for car waiting longest Look for any car prepared to travel (cover) Special rules apply for wheelchair vehicles and maxis System is fair Dispatching rules are complex.

25 Not covered Can’t learn everything at once. Read guide or watch tutorials. Topics not covered include: SMS/voice call to passenger Recording expenses Day/night lighting Flight details Recording lost property There is too much to cover. Read the book once you are comfortable using the basic features. Don’t be afraid to try things. Or ask.

26 Booking information All history is recorded and can be retrieved if necessary. Booking report is often used for police reports.

27 Summary Make yourself available after login
Job is offered as soon as a suitable car is available System is fair Failures — replace unit Look at guide and tutorials to learn about other features Re-start unit if it fails Keep calm! Drivers should see that work comes faster when it gets busy. The system is fair. Just make yourself available and work will come. Some equipment failures will occur. Spares are available. Should get a handout.

33 Dispatching Dispatching
Search layers first in the order specified by the fleet. When there are no more layers look for a car that is prepared to travel. In this example car 2 will get the offer as car 1 has indicated that he is not prepared to travel. However for most fleets the job will eventually be offered to car 1 – bookings can be auto-escalated by the system if they have been waiting too long, perhaps by looking for the closest car after 15 minutes. If "no location" is set in the booking then job goes to closest car. Can also apply to WAT and Maxi work automatically as an option. It is possible to limit the number of times an offer is made. Penalties are intended to encourage people to take work. There is no penalty for "no show" if the driver is near the pickup point. 39

Note there is normally not much point in having short cover distances as close jobs will normally be covered by the layers. 40
