3 Capacitors for DC Link DC link capacitors, aka bus or input capacitors, filter the rectified mains and supply pulse energy to the input of the inverter. Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors are typically used because of their high capacitance and bulk storage capability.

4 Capacitors for DC Link DC Link capacitors must provide both bulk energy storage and ripple current filtering. Some applications such as UPS and motor drives typically need high capacitance to prevent voltage sag during a power outage but it is often necessary to use excess aluminum capacitors in order to handle the ripple current requirements.

Lower cost for high ripple current applications Film caps are made to higher voltage ratings eliminating the need for complex parallel-series banks and balancing resistors. Fewer components results in lower assembly costs High Reliability Film caps can handle much higher overvoltage surges Self healing Film capacitors don’t contain electrolyte. No dryout No corrosion No leakers

6 Capacitors for DC Link Selecting the best capacitor for an application. Film or Aluminum? The main determining factors in choosing between an aluminum electrolytic and a film capacitor: If high capacitance is needed for “holdup” or to prevent voltage sag, aluminum electrolytics may be the best selections. Film capacitors are typically a better choice for applications requiring high ripple current and lower capacitance. Consider cost of electrolytics (series-parallel bus work and balancing resistors) Look at other design considerations such as life, reliability, cold impedance, physical size, possibility of overvoltage transients, etc. The rules of thumb outlined in this presentation for the cost per joule and the cost per amp will be of some help in choosing the right capacitor.
