A shockwave is a longitudinal acoustic wave consisting of a short pulse of about 5 µs duration that is characterized by a near instantaneous jump to a peak positive acoustic pressure, which is referred to as a 'shock', followed by a longer-lasting period of negative pressure. The amplitude of the negative pressure is always much less than that of the peak positive pressure, and no abrupt transition is observed in the negative phase of the waveform. Depending on the energy flux density used and the source of the shockwave, variations are seen in the shape and amplitude of the shockwave.
