2 What is justice? Directions: By yourself read though each case and determine if the case and punishment are fair and just. Case A: Joe is caught shoplifting (stealing) a cell phone from Best Buy. Joe is 15 years old, and its his first offense. The police call his parents and Joe returns the phone with no criminal record. It is fair to Joe? Is it fair to Best Buy? Is it fair to society? Is it in the best interest of society?

3 What is justice? Directions: With a partner read though each case and determine if the case and punishment are fair and just. Case B: Jack is caught shoplifting a cell phone from Best Buy. Jack is 19 years old, and this is his third felony conviction – all for shoplifting. Because of the Three Strikes Law, he is required to serve a minimum of 10 years in prison with no chance of parole. It is fair to Jack? Is it fair to Best Buy? Is it fair to society? Is it in the best interest of society?

Directions: With a partner read though each case and determine if the case and punishment are fair and just Case C: Sandra was caught on the softball field, smoking a cigarette during her off period. She has done it before, but this is the first time she was caught. Lakewood High School policy states that they could expel her from school because of this offensive. Lakewood decides not to expel her, but she is mandated to go to a weeklong non-smoking health course. It is fair to Sandra? Is it fair to Lakewood HS? Is it fair to society? Is it in the best interest of society?

Directions: You and a partner (optional) will work through three different sets of Hammurabi’s Code for document analysis. Analyze each set of laws at a time. Once you have completed one, come up and grab another set of laws. Work through your packet –this will be a useful study guide!! 3 sets include Family Law Property Law Personal Injury Law Make sure you get to all three!
