5 “Paris for Lunch, Dinner in St. Petersburg”
German strategy to wage a two front war – called the Schlieffen Plan Germany believed they could fend off Russia in the east while it defeated France in the west with a lightening-speed massive attack. Relied on German armies invading neutral Belgium to capture Paris.

6 Two Critical Assumptions
It would take Russia time to mobilize its huge army REALITY – Russia’s forces were prepared for battle when Germany declared war. 2. Britain would remain neutral. REALITY – Britain had promised to defend France it was attacked AND the Great Powers had agreed not to attack neutral Belgium.

7 Failure of the Schlieffen Plan
Germany was within 50 kilometers of Paris. Soldiers were exhausted by pace of attack through Belgium and France. Soldiers in the west had been pulled to reinforce defences in the east. Allies stopped Germany’s advance at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914.

8 Locked In Failure of Schlieffen Plan forced both German and French/British troops to dig into trenches on the Western Front. Neither were able to advance. STALEMATE!

9 The Trench System The German armies dug defensive line of trenches along the river Somme and into Belgium British and French dug their own system of trenches to face them. Trenches stretched from North Sea to the Switzerland Border Between the enemies lay no man’s land – wasteland of corpses, barbed wire and mud.

11 19th Century Warfare Had expected personal man-to-man combat.
Foot soldiers, supported by cavalry would try to outmanouevre the enemy to take control of the battlefield.

12 Industrialized War New technologies developed at the beginning of the 20th Century changed the way wars were fought. Open warfare was replaced with trench warfare. War became industrialized, modernized and impersonal Weapons of mass destruction could kill masses.
