2 Internet History Google the following questions… What is the internet?
What is the World Wide Web? What is the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web?

3 What is the Internet? The Internet connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. (webopedia.com)

4 What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet. The Web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data. The Web utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer, to access Web documents called Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks.(webopedia.com)

TOPICS ARPANET TCP/IP and Tim Berners-Lee Internet Timeline First Webpage Inside the Internet Archive’s Real-World Home History of the Internet What is the Internet…Really? Where Good Ideas Come From

6 ARPANET The internet was first established in the ’60s by the US Defense department It provided a form of communication when all else had failed – as a result of nuclear war The project was originally called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) The network was initially funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA) within the U.S. Department of Defense

7 TCP/IP and Tim Berners-Lee
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) was invented to allow other networks to connect to ARPANET and thus it became the INTERNET Tim Berners-Lee is credited with the creation of the world wide web By the mid ’90s the internet had experienced explosive growth, with the number of computers connected to the internet doubling every year

8 World Wide Web Timeline (1960 – 1979)
Important Dates during the creating of the World Wide Web The inception of Unix, the operating system whose design influenced that of Linux. (the operating system most popular in today’s web servers) Arpanet made its first trans-Atlantic connection with the University of London Computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time. In effect, they were the first hosts on what would one day become the Internet 1960’s 1966 1969 1971 1973 1979 ARPA project begins with Larry Roberts as chief scientist was first developed by Ray Tomlinson The decision was made for the symbol to separate the user name from the computer name Usenet was an internet-based discussion system, allowing people from around the globe to converse by posting public messages

9 World Wide Web Timeline (1980 – 1993)
January 1, 1983 was the deadline for Arpanet computers to switch over to the TCP/IP protocols One of the first major Internet worms was released. Referred to as "The Morris Worm", because it was written by Robert Tappan Morris The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs ARPANET ceased to exist 1983 1984 1988 1989 1990 1993 The domain name system was created This made addresses on the internet more user friendly compared to its numerical IP address Tim Berners-Lee wrote the proposal for the World Wide Web The First Website finds its way onto the World Wide

10 Inside the Internet Archive’s Real-World Home
You'll find wonderful things surfing the pages of the Internet an online library of millions of books, films, audio recordings, web pages and more The Internet Archive is a massive effort to digitize the full spectrum of human knowledge Go to to try out the Wayback Machine. Type in a website address and view it during different periods of time. Link to article and video

11 The Wayback Machine The Wayback Machine is an internet archive website
It takes snapshots of most websites, throughout the year, so that you can go back and look at what your favourite website looked like in the past, even back in the 1990s or early 2000’s  This archive currently has 469 billion web pages saved over time The following are some descriptions and screen shots comparing how a website looks today to a date in the past that my students created after using the Wayback Machine…
