Calculations How many time does your heart beat per day? Week? Month? Year? Your heart pumps ~5.3 quarts per minute. How many quarts are pumped in a day? Week? Month? Year? How many times has your heart beaten since you were born?
3
Your heart is about the same size as your fist.
An average adult body contains about five quarts of blood. All the blood vessels in the body joined end to end would stretch 62,000 miles or two and a half times around the earth. The heart circulates the body's blood supply about 1,000 times each day. The heart pumps the equivalent of 5,000 to 6,000 quarts of blood each day.
4
The Heart Central organ
Pumps blood through blood vessels (2.5 billion times in an average life) Cardiac Muscle
5
Circulation in the heart
7
Blood Vessels Arteries Capillaries Veins
Carry blood away from the heart Contains oxygen Capillaries Tiny vessels that allows for rapid exchange of materials. Veins Carries blood to the heart; deoxygenated
8
Patterns of Circulation
Pulmonary Circulation Blood traveling between the heart & lungs Systemic Circulation Blood traveling between the heart and all other body tissues
9
Lymphatic System Returns fluids to the bloodstream
Lymph- excessive fluid Lymph nodes filter the lymph, trapping foreign particles Contain lymphocytes (white blood cells)
10
Blood Plasma Red Blood Cells (erythrocytes)
Carries nourishment for cells Red Blood Cells (erythrocytes) Transport oxygen to the body White Blood Cells (leukocytes) Defends the body against disease Platelets Help the blood clot
11
Blood Types Determined by the type of antigen
Antigen- substance that stimulates an immune response A-B-O System- determining blood by the antigens located on the blood.
13
Rh System Rh Factor Antigen that may be on the surface of RBC
Named after the rhesus monkey where it was 1st discovered
17
Problems Heart Attack
18
High blood pressure
19
Stroke
20
Aneurysm- bulge of blood vessel due to weakening or disease
21
Varicose veins
22
Heart failure The heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be.
The weakened heart can’t supply the cells with enough blood. This results in fatigue and shortness of breath. Everyday activities can become very difficult.
23
Coronary artery disease
gradual buildup of fatty deposits in your coronary arteries (atherosclerosis) slowly narrow your coronary arteries, your heart receives less blood. diminished blood flow may cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath or other symptoms. A complete blockage can cause a heart attack. develops over decades so it can go unnoticed until it produces a heart attack.
