2. New Journeys and Badges
As of July 18, 2017, Girl Scouts has 3 new STEM journeys and 1 Outdoor Journey.
STEM Journeys- Available for Daisy, Brownie, Junior & Multi-Level
Outdoor Journeys- Available for ALL Levels.
Each is topic-specific, aligned to the five program outcomes.
This presentation serves as a general overview of the new Journeys materials and explanations of the new Journeys and badges only.

Girl Scouts is committed to ensuring that all content will be grounded in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience:

With this information, a national STEM strategy was developed with three priority areas:

In addition, the Outdoor Strategy was implemented, with three priority areas:

STEM Journeys and Badges — Summer 2017
As of July 18, 2017, there will be up to seven Journeys available for volunteers to choose from. They are:

Think Like an Engineer Daisy, Brownie & Jr.
Think Like a Programmer Daisy, Brownie & Jr.
Think Like a Citizen Scientist Daisy, Brownie & Jr.
Each Journey has 6 sessions. The first three sessions each have a hands-on activity related to the topic. For example, girls who do the Think Like an Engineer Journey will do a hands-on Design Challenge in each of the first three sessions. The last three sessions are focused on doing a Take Action project and a final celebration.
The engineering theme is Design Thinking. Girls learn to think like an engineer. We used content from Design Squad to create the series. We piloted it last fall with 10 councils and 96 troops and got great feedback which we’ve used to revise the content. In the Engineering category, we also have robotics badges – 3 each for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. That’s 9 badges in total. These badges introduce girls to robotics. They teach the basics — what robots are, what they can do, how they’re programmed and how they’re built — through hands-on activities. They are intentionally designed to be “unplugged” activities, meaning that girls can earn the badges without buying robotics kits. That’s so the program is accessible to all girls. Of course, if a volunteer wants to use kits to help girls complete the requirements, that’s fine.
The computer science theme is Computational Thinking. Girls learn how to think like a programmer – how numbers work, what algorithms are – through hands-on activities from code.org. In addition to the activities for girls, we were able to use code.org training videos as volunteer resources. We tested the activities with girls and volunteers. We were thrilled when some volunteers said, I wasn’t sure I could do this, but I watched the code.org videos and read the materials and thought, yes, I can handle this – and I did!
The outdoor STEM theme is Citizen Science. Scientists often need lots of data for their research, so they ask regular people — ie, citizens — to help collect it. Girls will use the scientific method when they do a citizen science project: they will make observations, collect data, and analyze it. There are two reasons why we chose this theme for Outdoor STEM. 1) The majority of citizen science projects are done outdoors. 2) Not every girl will grow up to be a scientist, but every girl is a citizen – and we want citizens who understand and appreciate science. We partnered with Scistarter, an organization that’s created a web site with more than 1,500 projects. The cool thing about the site is that list projects that children can do. They are helping us by selecting projects that are appropriate for our Girl Scout grade levels. We tested these with girls and volunteers. Our favorite anecdotes? After doing the activities, one group of girls decided that they wanted to organize a Day of Citizen Science as their Take Action project!

More Journey Options:
The new Journeys is about adding more choices that girls and volunteers already have.
Every Journey (old or new) is topic-specific.
Includes Hands-on activities
Incorporates Discover, Connect and a Take Action project.
Regardless of the time it takes to complete the Journey, they have been designed to be simpler to use and easier to deliver.

17. Journeys & Badges: What’s New? What’s Different? (continued)
There will be no physical books (leader guides or girl books) for the new Journeys. All the information can be found online in the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK). Individually registered girls, contact Customer Care for details.
The three original Journeys are still available.
New Journeys include LiA (Leader in Action) award components for appropriate age levels.
New Journeys count toward pre-requisites for Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The Take Action award for each of the new Journeys looks the same. Each girl still earns an award for each Take Action project she does within a journey.
Girls will still earn the Summit Award once they have completed ANY three Journeys for their grade level, including the new Journeys.

Multi- Level:
The new Multi-Level programming is designed for K-5 and includes content that is designed to be done together. No more need to separate Daisies and Brownies. Multi-level programming allows you to adjust the difficulty of the activities based on the grade levels of the girls.
New Badges in Robotics & Mechanical Engineering:
2017- New STEM badges only for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors.
2018- Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors can look forward to similar resources in the upcoming year.
Mechanical Engineering Badges – For both Daisies and Brownies, this requires the purchase of a engineering kit. Kits will be available via online starting 08/30/17 and will cost $99.00 each. Each kit can accommodate 12 girls and is reusable. One kit for all 3 engineering badges per grade level.

Charts will be Updated:
The list of the Girl Scout National Proficiency Badges that is in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting will be updated and available to download from the Girl Scout store.
The online Badge Explorer has a new design, and will include new badges soon.
There will be updated badge placement diagrams and will be available by the end of August. All the new Journeys and badges are official awards and will go on the front of the uniform.

21. Year in Review Options:
For example:
For Daisy Troops, you’ll have 9 year plan options. You can structure it as a Petals/Leaves year, a Journey Year or Create your own plan and mix and match.
All examples were taken from the Daisy’s journeys and badge information. However, the info is the same for all Daisy, Brownie and Juniors.
Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors currently do not have BADGES, only Journeys.
