*America was unprepared for war…. ……everyone needed to do their share! *How to pay for the war….. --Govt. needs to raise $$ from the people --Liberty Bonds---bonds sold to support the Allied cause---later redeemed for the original value, plus interest *$20 billion was raised ! Enough to pay for ¼ of war costs and give $10 billion to Allies during & after the war. *Boy/Girl Scouts, famous actors all sold bonds *75 K men hired to give 4 minute speeches before movies, plays *Buying bonds showed patriotism

*Managing the Economy---
--Govt. called on industry to switch from making commercial goods to war goods. --War Industries Board, War Trade Board, National War Labor Board----agencies all set up to help with the war effort **Govt. managed food and fuel---managed how much food people bought --made price controls---pricing determined by govt. --Rationing---distribute goods to consumers in a fixed amount --created daylight saving time---turning clocks ahead one hour in the summer….increased the # of hrs. available for work---also reduced the need for lights and reduced fuel

*Enforcing Loyalty---Govt. controlled news & information during the war.
--imposed censorship---nothing allowed to hurt war effort *fear of spies everywhere---restrictions on immigration --Germans—called Huns—old invasion barbarian group --German stopped being taught in schools --German music banned in concert halls --German Shepherds called “police dogs” --Hamburger became Salisbury steak --attacks on Germ. Immigrants—some killed *Repression of Civil Liberties--- --Sedition Act---any speech or action that encouraged rebellion was illegal.

--illegal to obstruct draft, sale of liberty bonds, talk negative about the U.S. government, the president, the army, navy, and Constitution! *Vigilantes lynched & horse whipped others for “anti-American” things *Good results for people after war--- --Afr. Am. & Mexican workers filled vacant jobs left by soldiers off fighting war --Women---worked on farms, other jobs that were previously only open to men e.g. telegraph messengers, elevator operators, letter carriers --400,000 women joined the industrial work force…first time, women were working toward equality.
