1 DO NOW You have 10 minutes to complete the “Essential Questions” on the first page of your Poetry Road Map.

2 Guided Notes What is poetry?
A poem is an artistic expression of human emotions.

3 The 5 Reasons People Write Poetry
Convey a thought or idea Tell a story Express feelings or mood Describe a scene Reveal a character

4 Poetry Form The structure a poet chooses to convey a poem

5 Stanza Two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem. Stanzas are usually the same length and follow the same pattern

6 Rhyme Rhyme Scheme The occurrence of the same or similar
sounds at the end of two or more words Rhyme Scheme The pattern established by the arrangement of rhymes in a stanza or poem. They are generally described by using letters to point out the reoccurring rhyme such as ABAB.

7 I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

8 Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed---and gazed---but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:

9 For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

10 Free Verse Poetry that does not follow a regular meter or rhyme scheme

11 Rhythm Repetition A musical quality produced by the repetition
of stressed and unstressed syllables. It is like the beat in music. Repetition Repeating a word or phrase throughout a poem

12 The Poet’s Corner Each day Ms. Gaffey will select 1 student poem to
be read aloud to the class. Snaps and candy prizes will be given to our fabulous class poets.
