2 News: Canada’s New Cabinet
“Because it’s 2015” Please record your thoughts on a sticky note and stick to board.

3 Previously… What motivates the construction of colonies within occupied territories? Which side benefits more in this relationship? How? What do you think of Champlain’s decision to ally with one side in a long standing conflict? Please consider a few things; his previous career, how long he had been in North America, language barriers, anything else you think may be relevant. The painting “Defaite des Yroquois au Lac de Champlain” depicts his battle with the Haudenosaunee based on a drawing he did. What does it tell us about his and the French point of view on the First Nations they were encountering?

4 Life in New France

5 Mannahatta Island: an example of settlement and development 1609-2014

6 The Feudal System European society was generally divided into a stratified system of lords and peasants who all owed allegiance in turn to the monarch (king or queen)

7 Settlement and Colonization
Champlain’s initial colony was tasked with bringing settlers to Canada and establishing seigneuries*. Seigneuries: feudal-like estate structures Champlain’s initial colony was tasked with bringing settlers to Canada and establishing seigneuries*. Seigneuries: feudal-like estate structures

8 Montreal Today L’ile d’Orleans today

9 Trivia What does the “H” in the Montreal Canadiens logo stand for?
For an extra 10 “no-points”, who is this guy?

10 The Seigneur (seng-er) and Habitant (hab-ee-tont)
Looking at the information on page with a partner, each complete a copy of the T-Chart citing the responsibilities and roles of the Seigneur and Habitant. To be added to our study file. Along with placemat activity and mind map assignment.

11 The Seigneury Land was parceled into seigneuries, feudal-style manors established mainly along the river in long strips . Each would be overseen by a seigneur (French word for “lord”) The habitant (settler/farmer) was responsible for paying a portion of their profits as rent, providing days of service to the seigneur, serve in a militia, keep land productive, and grind flour in the mill. Seigneur had to settle disputes, attract settlers, build a mill, and provide for defense. Farms were on average 150m wide, 2500m long.

12 The Coureurs de Bois In order to develop trade relationships with the Native peoples, the French sent explorers and Coureurs de Bois (Runners of the woods) deep into the continent, looking for furs and the NW passage. Independent, not part of monopolies, broke and bent the rules about who to trade with. Married and integrated into Native culture. Went to the source. Travelled in Birch bark canoes along the waterways.

13 Demographics: immigration by gender

14 Critical Questions Please describe the layout of the Seigneurie and the reasoning behind it. If the relationship between the Seigneur and the Habitant seemed uneven, why do you think the habitants would have agreed to take such a dangerous journey and move to North America? Why do you think the French encouraged the Coureurs de Bois to intermarry with the First Nations people? What evidence would suggest that this was an official policy?

15 Missionaries Jesuits were an order of Catholic priests sent by Cardinal Richelieu to spread Christianity to the First Nations. Tasked with learning languages, living with, and adapting to native culture and traditions. Accepted by some Native people, but many did not want to abandon their pre-existing belief systems. Beginning of a pattern of paternalistic relations with First Nations
