4 Juliet’s Birthday Lammas Eve is Juliet’s birthday – July 31st. The next day, called Lammas-tide, “the earliest corn to ripen was made into loaves, which was a festival celebrating the beginning of harvest.” “These associations with youth, plenty and ripening grain were also appropriate for Juliet who’s at ‘a pretty age.’” The play takes place at the beginning of July, a few weeks before Juliet’s 14th birthday.

Sun, Moon, and Gods In order to keep track of the allusions to the sun, moon, stars, and Roman gods mentioned in the play, look through Act 1, Scenes 1 – 4 and list every quote that mentions one of the topics. Act/Scene Quote Referring to… Explanation Prologue “A pair of star-cross'd lovers..” Romeo & Juliet Stars represent fate, saying that the lovers’ relationship was always meant to happen.
