3 MLA & Essay Writing Tips Review Game
Yesterday, in small groups, we reviewed the basics of MLA formatting and some important essay writing tips that will help you on your final as well as on the Newsela.com assignment. Today, we will review this information as a whole class while playing a game  .

4 MLA and Essay Writing Game
Objective: Provide more, better, and faster answers than any other team. Purpose 1: Review Basic MLA Formatting and formal Writing Tips Purpose 2: Preparation for our upcoming projects, final, and college.

5 What you will Need Score Card (to be provided when it is time to Practice) Team (the people you are sitting with) A writer (who will write all of the answers) A Bringer (who will bring your answers to me) Missions List (to be provided when it is time to start) Optional: a spy (someone in your group who will walk around looking for Answers on The other Team’s pages)

7 How do we win? Speed, Quality, and Quantity You will complete seven missions. The more answers you give that relate to the mission, the more points you receive. The first two teams to turn in answers will receive extra points (to be explained in more detail in an upcoming slide)

8 Rule # 1 It is your job to protect your answers. Corporate theft happens all the time. if you don’t protect them , Ideas are stolen.

9 Rule # 2 Be careful if you choose to become a double agent (your friend promises to share the winnings with you if his or her team wins because you secretly texted him or her your team’s answers). do you believe your friend will share the winnings?

10 Rule # 3 No fouls (don’t hit teammates or opponents. Don’t touch anyone with anything.) Behave in a sportsman-like manner.

11 Rule # 4 You may access your phone or laptop to help with some answers, but be mindful of your time.

12 Important Each team will need a “Bringerr” and a “Writer.” All team members are “Idea generators.” When you see the “Turnumin” slide after The final mission, you will need to have already designated one person as the “Bringer.” Bringers, when you see the turnumin slide, you will bring your team’s answers to me.

13 important The first team to turn in answers earns 5 extra points to the scorecard. The second team to turn in answers earns 2 extra points to the scorecard. Scorecards that are not turned in by the time we see the “Time’s Up” slide (Very last Slide of the game) will not be graded. Once each team receives a scorecard, we will practice.

14 Practice (120 Seconds) Idea Generators: Think of a team name
Writers: Write all of your names on the scorecard. Writers: List all of your team’s favorite snacks. Bringers: When the “Turnumin” slide appears, promptly Bring your scorecard to me. (120 Seconds)

15 Turnumin Bringers, bring your scorecard to me and pick up your missions list.

16 Mission One: Avoidance
There are certain words that should be avoided when writing formal essays. What are they? (30 seconds)

17 Mission two: organization
For this class and for your college English classes, a formal essay must follow a certain organization and format. What is it? Remember, the more answers you give, the more points you earn. (30 seconds)

18 Mission Three: mla Date
Write today’s date in MLA format. (10 seconds)

19 Mission Four: MLA header
What should appear in the upper right hand corner of the MLA essay? (10 seconds)

20 Mission Five: MLA Heading

21 Mission Six: developing vocabulary / being precise
Write as many variations as possible to improve the vocabulary and precision of the following sentence: (120 Seconds) lucy got a new car.

22 Mission Seven: paragraph development
“In the end only kindness matters”(Jewel). - Why? Answer with one well-developed paragraph. Have a topic sentence. Avoid informal / overused words. (180 seconds)

23 Turnumin Takers, bring your team’s answers to me. (30 seconds)

24 Time’s Up! If your Scorecard is not already in my possession, it is not going to be graded.

25 Novel Studies We must now return to our regularly scheduled program . . . I will be scoring the scorecards while you begin the teacher- generated discussion questions for your novel. You may work with your team on the discussion questions. Keep the teacher-generated discussion questions as part of your final exam study guide.

26 Teacher Generated Discussion Questions
Working independently and with your team, answer the provided discussion questions for your novel. After I score the scorecards, I will announce the winners. Then, you will need to begin silently reading your novel, working on newsela, your project, or your memorization until I am with your group to hear and the discuss the questions you generated yesterday. I also want to hear your thoughts on the discussion questions I provided.
