2 Eleanor Roosevelt: New Deal program provided opportunity for women:
Eleanor Roosevelt’s causes included: 1. Advanced public health and education 2. Promoting the Arts in rural areas 3. Addressing flood control (TVA) FDR even included the 1st female cabinet member: Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins * However, the New Deal also did not fight against labor discrimination. (New Deal programs – CCC, WPA)

3 Stronger political voice for African Americans…
President Roosevelt invited many African-American leaders to advise him… Black Cabinet – African Americans who were unofficial advisors to the President.

4 New Deal Legislation for Native Americans…
By the early 1930’s only 48 million acres remained in Native American control (138 million in 1887) To prevent further loss of land, Congress passed… The Indian New Deal – a program that gave Indians economic assistance and greater control over their own affairs New Deal programs built new schools and hospitals on Indian controlled land. Also created the Indian Civilian Conservation Corp and Bureau of Indian Affairs. Indian Reorganization Act – restored tribal control over Native American land

5 New Deal Coalition: - political force formed by diverse groups who united to support FDR and his New Deal programs. Included Southern Whites, African Americans, poor midwestern farmers, and blue-collar workers from the north. Changed African-American voting patterns (Republican to Democrat)

6 FDR Provides: FDR did not want to leave anyone behind:
Welfare State – Gov. that assumes responsibility for providing for the welfare of children and the poor, elderly, sick, disabled, and unemployed.
