1.3 Studying Life SC.912.L.14.1 Created by Lynn Collins (April, 2013)

2 Key Questions What characteristics do all living things share?
What are the central themes of biology? How do different fields of biology differ in their approach to studying life? How is the metric system important in science?

3 Asexual reproduction homeostasis
Vocabulary Biology DNA Stimulus Sexual reproduction Asexual reproduction homeostasis Metabolism biosphere

4 Think about it… News stories you have heard – these stories involve biology – the science the employs scientific methodology to study living things… cloning, drug abuse and brain damage and the bird flu

5 Characteristics of Living Things
are made up of cells – basic units of life have a universal genetic code - DNA obtain and use materials and energy - metabolism grow and develop Reproduce – sexual/ asexual respond to their environment - stimulus Maintain a stable internal environment - homeostasis Change over time – living things evolve Metabolsim – combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials.

6 Is It Alive? The fish are clearly alive, but what about the stuff around them?

7 Performing Biological Investigations Scientific Measurement
Based on multiples of 10. Most scientists use the metric system when collecting data and performing experiments.
