MHA CoP – Chapter 8 – Privacy, dignity and safety. Mental Health Act. Article 8 European Convention of Human Rights “Right to Respect for Private and Family Life” Common Law and Duty of Care. Proportionate to the risk – no blanket restrictions.

Historical and Current risk. How decision on ratings made (clinical and risk assessment). Patient involvement (made aware). Care planning and review.

7 Measurable Outcomes Random Ward Sweeps.
No incidents regarding fire, or weapons. Prohibited items still found such as carrier bags, deodorant cans, tablets. Highlighted that visitors to the wards were bringing prohibited items on, intentionally and unintentionally. Discussion around further safety for the unit to reduce risk further.

8 Introduction of Visitors Lockers

9 Visitors Lockers Introduced to reduce prohibited items coming onto the ward. Information about change available from reception staff and introduced into carers pack. Further ward sweeps and incidents to be reviewed to measure success.

10 Feedback and Moving Forward.
Feedback from patients regarding the search process – do they feel that the ward is a safer place. Feedback from reception staff dealing with visitors regarding lockers. Presentation to Livewell from Together NHS foundation Trust. Transferring practice to female ward at the Unit.
